    Glass or Plastic for Bottling

Yes, all bottles had the same treatment - good cleaning (I clean them properly after drinking from them anyway) and sanitising. They have the same headspace when bottling and the glass bottles are brown (not clear) - I tighten the PET bottles as much as I can and the beers seem to have the same...

    Glass or Plastic for Bottling

So, I brewed an all grain Amber Ale and I decided to bottle this one in my Coopers PET bottles as I thought it may not turn out too good as I struggled a bit with the brew temp - I also put some in glass (brown) bottles too. Anyway some weeks later the beer tastes great, a nice Amber ale with a...

Help with low SG and fast fermentation

Also interested in the right way to use a refractometer as I do have one. Thanks

Help with low SG and fast fermentation

I measured with a hydrometer - reading the comments I am thinking the mash temp may have been a bit high, 68 instead of 66 at the start - would that be enough to mess with enzymes? My thermometer is new - a Catertemp which I see a lot of brewers using but I will check it. as I am using an AIO...

Help with low SG and fast fermentation

Hi, looking for a bit of info on my all grain brews. This is the 3rd all grain kit I have brewed and I seem so be getting a low SG before ferment - I am following the instructions carefully but this last brew showed 1050 at the end of the boil (I let the sample cool) but later showed 1043...

Undercarbed All Grain - can it be fixed?

Thanks all, I should have said that when opening the bottle there is a very small amount of hiss but no head so I think the yeast is not dead. I think I am going to open them and dose with 1/2 teaspoon (500ml bottle) and see how it goes but this is all very useful info for future cock ups...

Undercarbed All Grain - can it be fixed?

Thanks for the replies. The bottles were stored at 22c for two weeks then moved to a slightly cooler place for another week. Done that many times before without issues. The yeast was Lallemand BRY 97 I was thinking that a prolonged stay in the fermenter was not good - never left one this long...

Undercarbed All Grain - can it be fixed?

I brewed an Amber ale but the fermentation seemed to finish very quickly - 3 days - and the FG was a bit high. So I added more yeast which did nothing. I left it in the fermenter for about two and a half weeks then batch primed using one of the calculators - if anything I went a bit higher with...

About to start kegging - can I store beer?

Thanks, I am thinking that I will prime it with sugar (dextrose) and leave till needed. I assume I will need to inject some CO2 to seal the lid at the start. So when drinking do I just add CO2 as the level goes down to keep it carbonated?

About to start kegging - can I store beer?

Ok hi all, I am just starting to go the kegging route and was wondering if this plan is going to be OK. I want to do a brew, then keg it, pressurising to purge oxygen but then leaving it till I need it then setting the right pressure for carbonating and serving. I want to get a couple of...

Advice On A Stalled All Grain Fermentation

Thanks Foxy, Thinking the mash SG was high as the recipe was for 25l but I made 24l so that may be the reason.

Advice On A Stalled All Grain Fermentation

Thanks for the replies - if it is insufficient yeast can it be rescued? I am just tempted to cold crash and bottle it and move on. Just checked the SG again with a hydrometer - 1018. Something not right here.

Advice On A Stalled All Grain Fermentation

So it has been 7 days now - the Tilt shows 1012 and has been like that for 4 days. I have now checked with my Stevenson hydrometer which shows 1016! so no idea what's going on. I remembered I bought a refractometer which I haven't used yet only to find I had bought a version with a Brix reading...

No first time with this yeast - normally use US-05.

Advice On A Stalled All Grain Fermentation

Thanks for detailed info - very helpful. I have the probe from an STC1000 fixed to the side of the fermenter with some insulation over it so hopefully the temp is from the wort rather than the ambient temp. The STC also controls a small heater inside the fridge . the temp has kept within 1/2 deg...

Advice On A Stalled All Grain Fermentation

Thanks for the reply - yes I will do a hydro reading but was going to wait a bit longer - I was wondering if it had stalled maybe there was something to do now. As you say I will give it time. Cheers

Advice On A Stalled All Grain Fermentation

As I am still very new to A/G brewing I could use a bit of advice. I brewed an A/G Amber Ale last week and followed the recipe exactly. I hit the correct mash temp etc and the brew seemed to go well. The initial gravity was a bit lower than the recipe at 1040 instead of 1042. So into the temp...

    My First All Grain!

UPDATE: so my first all grain was ready to gulp down - well almost as I got impatient and tried one after 2 weeks and initially it tasted a bit home brew - I was disappointed but remembering previous comments I left it a bit longer and it turned into a really nice drinkable hoppy beer - it...

    Beer Temp for Carbonation

Quick question re bulk priming as my beers seem to vary so much in carbonation. I am using priming calculators to work out my priming rate and they are asking for the beer temp. As I have cold crashed the beer should I enter the current cold crashed temp (5c) or the temp it fermented at (18c)...
