Anglian Craft Brewers Homebrew Competition 2023

Quite simply....it was customer demand!!! I was contacted by a couple of brewers who have brewed "clones" of well known beers (not the same beers) who wanted feedback on their beers. Otherwise...no, 34 would not have featured as an entry category. We will have to find suitable categories to...

    Noble hops - bittering

Magnum is my "go to" bittering hop for German styles instead of using low AA noble hops early in the boil.

    Bottling day help

My only additional equipment is a stainless bottling bucket with a stainless tap (its actually a basic Anvil FV)....takes less five minutes to clean out (oh...and a silicone pipe to transfer the beer from the FV). An O2 free transfer from FV to the bottling bucket (or at worst a semi open...

    LAB Open 2023

I sent three bottle conditioned beers...they were posted timed to arrive on Friday 5th to give them maximum standing time, which they did. One dark, one amber, one pale beer. All were "praised" for their clarity....with comments such as brilliantly clear, bright, clear, very clear, good clarity...

Anglian Craft Brewers Homebrew Competition 2023

Right folks.....I guess that you are all deeply engrossed reading your feedback sheets from the LAB Open and planning improvements to your beers....where better to get your tweaked beers (or others that you might brew in the next couple of months) judged, than at the ACB Homebrew Comp in early...

    LAB Open 2023

Decent enough scores for my beers, no real major issues. My spiced Biere de Garde got 34 with mostly comments about the spices hiding the base beer which is fair enough. My German Helles Exportbier got 37 with perhaps some red apple esters being present....longer lagering might clear that up...

    Scottish National Homebrew Competition

I believe that the Norwich guys did the same last year and we will do the same with our Anglian Craft Brewers comp this year.

    Recommend a PH meter

I've never believed in the measure and adjust approach for that very reason....by the time you know if your mash pH is off, there is little that can be done about it. Predict, measure, record and then adjust for the next brew is all that is reasonably practical. Yes you might brew a different...

    Sold Dissolved Oxygen Meter AZ8403

Clearing out the brewspace and I found an AZ8403 D.O. Meter that I had forgotten I had. Originally purchased from the Malt Miller three or four (?) years ago but probably only used half a dozen times over a three month period before I gave up worrying about DO...

What do you stand your Kettle /Brewzilla / Grainfather /Brewtools etc on?

So I brew in my garage and when not in use the G40 sits on some racking along with a host of other bits including the tea urn sparge water heater. The secret is the stowaway shelf stored under the racking...you can see it just peeking out in the first picture. The hinged legs (see picture...

Norwich Amateur Brewers - Brew Like A Monk (14 October 2023)

I've often found that Celeia (or other Styrian type hops) works well in Belgian type beers especially as a flavouring hop combined with German Brewers Gold as the main bittering hop.

Is Tesco Ashback water still a good option?

No...I dont test the water each time. I assume that Spotless does what it says it does and is utterly free from TDS (I will test it once in a blue moon just to check but nothing regular). Although the tap water can be variable, because I'm diluting mine by a considerable amount, any variation...

Dark Helles recipe - comments very welcome

I would take your guide from the beer you tasted in Austria....did it have a bitter balance or was there a hop character to the beer? If the latter then yea...20g at the end of the boil might introduce some of what you want. Depends if you want to brew a dark Helles...in which case the balance...
