    Secret Santa Reviews 2023

I had the same 3 beers as you, had 2 of the 3 so far: First up was the Patersbier. Right up my street, easy drinking with a lovely bubblegum-like Belgian character. Head was small, but what was there remained all the way down the glass and created some nice lacing. Really enjoyed this one...

    Secret Santa 2023

I was going to last night but I was in a lager mood, so had a bottle of Spaten I bought in Sainsburys yesterday and a couple of my own NZ Pils instead. I’ll probably have my 2 less strong ones tonight and the 3rd one tomorrow or Boxing Day.

    Secret Santa 2023

Just found my second Secret Santa at my back door - Royal Mail doing their usual of not ringing the doorbell, not leaving a card and dumping a package at the back of the house! I’ve received another 2 bottles - a Patersbier and a Festive fruit beer

My first one has arrived - an 8.7% Belgian Red in a plastic bottle. Apologies to my 2, I won’t be able to post until Saturday

Whats the collective thoughts on these fermenter floating devices?

MaltMiller did the Rapt Pill for £30 for Black Friday. I haven’t used it yet thought because I have 4 full kegs

    Good deal on Klarstein 65l?

Klarstein don't, but these machines are all the same Guten machines as the BrewDevil etc. The manufacturer is on AliExpress and a few guys at the brew club have had excellent service for replacement parts from them.

Who are your top 5 influential breweries?

Brewdog - like many other people they were my “gateway” into craft beer and the brewery that inspired me to start homebrewing. Paulaner - Helles is my favourite lager style and, whilst I prefer Augustiner, Paulaner is the most widely available. They also do a cracking hefeweizen. Verdant -...

    PH Test Strips

I was thinking this. Sour beer is about 3.5, it’s not normal for tap water to be anywhere near that low!

    Does it get expensive?

MM have sold out - 50% off was a very good deal, especially since some retailers are still selling it at a higher price than MM’s £60 “before” price. I’d been eyeing them up at £75 in the summer around birthday time.

    Does it get expensive?

Home brewing is the most expensive way to save money. Did I need to spend £30 on a Rapt Pill in the MM Black Friday sale? Not really. Did I buy one? Of course! Will I replace my Inkbird with a Rapt temperature controller at some point over the next few months so I can link the pill to it? Probably.

    Beginners Sour.

You don’t need to designate the fermenter as sours only because Philly Sour isn’t meant to contaminate. It’s meant to be quite a “weak” yeast and any normal brewing yeast should “kill it off”. In terms of your recipe, bitterness and sourness can clash so it can be quite difficult to get the...

    Beginners Sour.

I’m me thing you need to remember with the Philly Sour yeast is you need to have plenty of simple sugars in there to get it sour enough.

Brewing a lager kit with ale yeast vs. lager yeast

I’m assuming you have proper temperature control? You’ll need it for a proper lager yeast. Otherwise have you considered a hybrid strain like MJ California Lager or Lallemand Novalager?

    Pressure brewing

Yep, I’m here to correct you 😂 Pressure fermenting suppresses yeast esters, but the OP is referring to dry hopping kits and, if anything, pressure fermenting should retain hop flavour/aroma better than “standard” fermenting. It should only give a bland/neutral beer if he’s using an estery...

Would you swap your all in one?

I’ll keep my BrewDevil going until it dies. Ideally I should have bought a 40L instead of a 30L but other than that I love it. Having said that if my parents fancy buying me something really nice for my 40th I wouldn’t say no to a shiny new Grainfather or something.

    What did you brew today?

This was my brewday yesterday - a Percy Pig sour. I did it last year and it was a very balanced beer, not quite sour enough and not Percy-forward enough but a lovely beer. I’ve upped the Percies by 50% and added some caster sugar to help increase the sourness. 2kg lager malt 2kg wheat malt 500g...
