Came downstairs this morning to a burst bottle

It has been warm recently. I have used clear Newkie Brown bottles and had two of them go in the garage. One the bottom blew off, the second went off like a grenade. The remainder drink well but are very lively, but not gushing when opened. I suspect they have got too hot in the garage and the...

    Bad bottle? (bottle bomb)

This is enlightening. Please see my post in 'gushers again'. Since posting that, I've had another Newkie Brown clear bottle go off like a grenade. These have been stored in the garage and the posts above suggest it's just too warm for them. I shall have to find a different storage solution in...

    Gushers again

Great description! I have a batch of Mangrove Jack's Pale Ale bottled in 550ml Newkie Brown bottles. Had real trouble with stuck fermentation and added extra dextrose to get it going again, which it did. Finally finished at 1.010 rather than the 1.006 projected in the guide. Primed the whole...

Stuck fermentation on a Mangrove Jack's kit?

Thanks all who advised on this thread. The final gravity at bottling was 1.010 and the additions were 1.2KG of LME plus the subsequent addition of 500g of Dextrose. Next time I will use the calculators online and add extra dextrose at the start. Anyway, this has now produced a brew at 4.7% ABV...

Thanks - will check out the Pleasure Principle. Have always loved Code 37 - started watching it because we had just been to Gent and got hooked.

The 'Recommend me a TV series' thread

Yes - Before we die in the UK remake was pretty formulaic and wooden, as someone else mentioned. original in Swedish was far better. What is it with BBC drama these days?

The 'Recommend me a TV series' thread

So much great European stuff on All4 in the Walter Presents section. Some of it makes BBC output look very lame. And it's all free of course. Recommend brilliant Belgian series The Twelve - courtroom drama and Code 37 Sex Crimes - quirky and at times humorous police series, Dutch series The...

Stuck fermentation on a Mangrove Jack's kit?

Is it a temperature control problem? So, the Mangrove Jack's Pale Ale ended up at a FG of 1.010 when I bottled it, with no problems. Still higher than the claimed target FG, but because I had added an extra 500g of dextrose, the ABV is about 4.7%, rather than the target 4.4%. The addition of...

Stuck fermentation on a Mangrove Jack's kit?

Thanks! I used 140g for 20L of St Peter's Golden Ale and it came up a bit fizzy. So will check this out.

Stuck fermentation on a Mangrove Jack's kit?

You're right - I assume because they're trying to sell you MJ's carbonation drops! I always add priming sugar at the racking off stage. I go by the guide table in my John J Palmer brewing bible ("How to Brew"). A 23 litre kit would need c. 158g of Dextrose to prime the racked off brew. Festival...

Stuck fermentation on a Mangrove Jack's kit?

Yes thanks. It seems to be stabilising around 1.009 now, which in reality may be 1.010 allowing for the warm conditions. I'll leave it a few days and then bottle when it's clearly not moving any more. At the risk of boring everyone to death, I'll report back on the final result. I will also try...

Stuck fermentation on a Mangrove Jack's kit?

Hi Knuckles! Yes, as clib advised me, if you consult the Brewer's Friend calculators Homebrew Beer Calculators for Brew Day | Brewer's Friend, you see that the amount of extract in these kits, combined with either 1.2Kg pure LME or 1Kg of dextrose, is only sufficient to get the gravity up to...

Stuck fermentation on a Mangrove Jack's kit?

Thanks - brew back up and running now. Even if it now stops at 1.011, it will be the right strength and should have some body I hope.

Stuck fermentation on a Mangrove Jack's kit?

Many thanks for all the advice. I'm learning fast here. I will add 500g of dextrose to the current brew to get me up to an expected ABV of 4.4% and see if it ferments out. I'll watch out for yeast age. Have consulted the calculators on Brewersfriend - that belies the Mangrove Jack claim that it...

Thanks. I'll try that to cheer it up.

Belgian Pale Ale/Blond kits and the Brewferm version

Thanks for the tip. Please see my other post, just up, on a stuck fermentation. You may be able to advise me!

Stuck fermentation on a Mangrove Jack's kit?

I have set off a Mangrove Jack's Brewer's series Pale Ale. It's a 1.7Kg kit to which I added a 1.2Kg pouch of light liquid malt extract. Normally I would expect that to increase the fermentation potential of the brew. The kit claims to produce a FG of 1.006 and an ABV of 4.4%. So, I had trouble...
