    Heriot-Watt Brewing and Distilling course

Oh I’m planning on doing so, but realising that I’ve some weeks to go before I can give a coherent view on it. Some of the articles on wort boiling are at the level where I don’t understand the terms being used, and I have to read them in short sessions as otherwise I just feel cross eyed. One...

    Heriot-Watt Brewing and Distilling course

So I’m lurking a bit on the forum, checking in every so often, so thought I really should come back and post occasionally. The first week’s lecture on wort boiling is today and I’ve learnt so much already about boil times and function. Just when I thought I knew what I was talking about I looked...

    Heriot-Watt Brewing and Distilling course

Just popping in to note that I’ve signed up this semester to the Boiling and Fermenting module of the course for the start of this year. So the 30 minute boil thread is definitely getting a redux 😝.

    Anna's Brewdays

I've an awful lot on for the next couple of months, I messed up on a packaging issue, the HW course is going to restart and I've a job application to prep for. Soo... I'm going to be away for a bit from the forum, need to get back to basics a bit on the brewing. Will be back in the Autumn...

Liquor/Water Analysis - Murphy & Son, anyone used their service?

Yes, I've used Murphy and Son, provided a report here Beginners Guide to Water Treatment (plus links to more advanced water treatment in post #1) I should though point out that the report was very close to the publicly available report from Scottish Water, so it was interesting but I'm not...

    Gushing!

You’re best bet is getting the bottles really cold, down to just below zero if you can and holding it there for a couple of days to stabilise the carbonation. You should then be able to open your bottles without them gushing. If need be get them down to -2, if you are able to put them in a...

    Heriot-Watt Brewing and Distilling course

It depends on how many modules you do at a time. Cost wise I'm just doing one module a semester and I can work it in to home life with cooking and the children, working full time and two evenings a week in the hospital. I'd guess in the region of 10 hours a week, sometimes a bit less sometimes a...

    Duty increase.

The current government seems to be a mess. I can sort of see the merit of taxing higher ABV beers more if they are drunk in similar quantities, since it’s good for our health. But taking port and fortified wines more…. really 🧐🙄..they are not drunk in the same quantities so that just doesn’t...

Are 6 bottle wine kits worth it?

That is a real relief as I'd been a bit stressed about leaving it so long on the sediment. I reckoned I didn't need sorbate if left that long, similarly with finings. It is a white wine I'd actually drink.... which is quite an accolade as I don't really drink much wine at all, a six bottle case...

Are 6 bottle wine kits worth it?

A long time ago in a thread far far back.... I had two wine kits I planned on doing a side by side test, one with sorbate and finings and one without. Then got fed up and put the whole lot into a 60 litre pressure controlled fermenter... then left them to ferment, then degass ambient and clear...

    Mead nutrients

This is my go to calculator which thankfully is back up after a while not being available. It gives a DAP & Fermaid K schedule which I’ve used to good effect before. BatchBuildr - MeadMakr Point of note - at each staged addition in the first few days with stirring or shaking in there is a LOT of...

    Mead nutrients

I use DAP for mead with, as a replacement for Fermaid K, Tronozymol which I’m a bit of a fan of as a general yeast nutrient.

    Barbenheimer

Just out of the marathon of the two films... I did take some home made sandwiches and cans of juice, but had bought popcorn at the shop prior to today instead of making it. No Barbie box to be photographed in so you're all spared that sight of me. I had found a bright pink cardigan and flowery...

An unusual question, just to stir your brains

Oh gosh I didn't mean that at all, it was if anything trying to be self deprecating on my part. I do not ever put people down*, personally or professionally, it's never worth it. [EDIT* I make an exception for some politicians]

    Footwear for the brewery

Oh I’m glad someone else feels the same way about Crocs. Sadly on a pumped transfer this week the hose dislodged itself from the keg and in a few seconds poured lager onto the floor …and my shoes. I agree on the hot liquids issue. I’m thinking proper wellies till Birthday/Christmas for the red...

    Barbenheimer

Not if you have an embarrassing mum who makes homemade popcorn and cans of beer 😝. I haven’t tried making hot dogs but it’s an idea 😂

What are you drinking tonight 2023.

I’m on annual leave so it’s allowed 😇. A small sample of my Dubbel which is clearing nicely. It’s nae half bad even if I may say myself.

    Hello From South West Scotland

A warm welcome, and good to see another member joining from Scotland. How far away from Glasgow are you as there's a pretty decent homebrew shop there with plenty of kits, which avoids the postage charge.

    Footwear for the brewery

I suspect I may have already discovered the most inappropriate footwear for brewing activities… court shoes, suede in particular… they will never recover 🙈. This evening comes a close second after spilling a litre or so of lager from a pumped hose onto white Converse shoes. Ok ok I know 🤦‍♀️. At...
