    What did you brew today?

Slightly undershot the gravity at 1.040 or 1.039. but looks pretty good. All tucked up in the fermenter at exactly 19° now.

    Four Priests Brewery YouTube channel

People I England love to complain. We have friends who own a smallholding and keep animals on it. People bought a house that backed onto the smallholding and complained about the animal smell. No-one was quite sure what they expected. 🤷‍♂️

Has the classic Best Bitter lost its flavour?

I think the fashion is a huge thing. "Bitter" congers up images of old men in flat caps drinking beer from old dimple glasses on their way home from the coal mine. People don't want that because that's what old codgers drink. But give them a nice pint of "amber ale" in a tall glass and they...

Keep your ale from warming up

I remember going on a Greene King brewery tour in the early 2000s. One of the entries in the visitor book was "Good Lord, what on earth have you done to Ruddles County?!?"

    What did you brew today?

About 18 months ago I said I would try brewing murgy Straight. After 18 months of procrastination, the day has finally arrived! 😂 Looking nice and clear so far. I've just measured out the hops and they smell amazing! I've never used talus before. Very different aroma to citra.

    Collaborative Brew Schedule - 2024

Sadly, my schedule got away from me this year and there is no bier being garded. Must try better next time. B- 😞

    Octopus energy

We're on Octopus agile. The price of electricity has just gone negative. And I'm brewing tomorrow, so I'm actually getting paid to heat up my brewing water! (And the fan heater is on too) Update. Well that's a bit crazy. We scheduled the washing, tumble dryer, dishwasher, mash and sparge...

    Brewing with rosewater...

I do like Turkish delight. But I wouldn't want it in a beer!

    Brewing with rosewater...

Personally, I think that sounds horrible! But I would just add the rose water to the fermenter or even bottle. Boiling will almost certainly drive off a lot of the aromatics, if not alter the flavour (I've never cooked rose)

    Grainfather G30 Rolled Edge Plates

That was my initial thoughts when I saw the design. I have been guessing that the new basket will hide the effects of a stuck mash (essentially, you can stil get a stuck mash and wort will not flow through the mash but instead out of the sides) - so effectively you are recirculating the wort...

    Octopus energy

We have solar panels and a battery. I run a home assistant server that gets the forecast for agile (variable) electricity rates a day in advance and so intelligently schedules charging the battery at the cheapest rates overnight. This evening is going to fill the battery at 6p/kWh. Even if you...

Hop basket or bag, which to use?

That explains it. It's hard to judge the scale of them from an image. Looks identical to the ones we use for tea - but obviously isn't!!

Hop basket or bag, which to use?

Is that one of those tea infuser things that's about the size of a golf ball? If so, there's no way that you can get 30g of hops in there. Let alone allow for the expansion of the hops as they rehydrate

    Storage of yeast-freeze - refrigerate ???

My microbiologist wife can't think of much of a benefit in freezing dried yeast. Bring dried it's already put into a dormant state. Cooling it helps a bit, but she can't see that you'll get much benefit freezing it instead of keeping it in the back of the fridge. And if there is a bit of...

    Storage of yeast-freeze - refrigerate ???

You could try it. If there is going to be damage done, it'll likely be on the first 1 day/week. You could chuck a sacrificial sachet in the freezer and open it again in a week's time and see how viable it is. If you want to be even cheaper, you could try with bread yeast. Easy to do and verify...

    Monitoring leccy usage

If I didn't already have 6 smart plugs around the house I'd probably get some more!

    Monitoring leccy usage

Ah..., looking at it, the p100 (what I have and what you linked to) only monitors the time it's been on, not the power. The p110 monitors the power

    Monitoring leccy usage

Interesting... We have the same ones. It'll show me how long it's been running, but not the electricity used (tapi p100)

Plenty of people on this thread seem to have an insight into their books, given the messages about profit margins, profitability etc etc
