February 2023 competition - Dark beers

It's definitely a style that seems to sit between 2 of the competition categories - Dark and then British pales & bitters. What do others think? @Leon103?

February 2023 competition - Dark beers

What style is it? I reckon that might be a bit light for a dark beer category. Happy to do a swap instead for some feedback?

    Klarstein Mundschenk

Yeh I already use a spider so it's just the break material I'm worried about but it seems the Brewzilla is set up to whirlpool & seems to be basically the same bit of kit.

    Hazelwood’s Brewday Part 2

Ah I see. How do you find it compares to a traditional lager yeast?

    Klarstein Mundschenk

2 brews done on the new kit now & my brew house efficiency has jumped from 65% on my old Maischfest to nearly 80% on the Mundschenk! Very smooth brewdays & will now look to see if I can use the recirculation pump for whirlpooling. Would very much recommend taking the plunge for the price!

    Hazelwood’s Brewday Part 2

Out of interest, what temperature have you got your cabinet at in order to ferment a pilsner & ales? Very jealous of the cabinet by the way!

February 2023 competition - Dark beers

Hi everyone, @dave_77 is judging January's American pale competition this weekend so it's time to start thinking about February's! Category is "Dark beers" so lots of possible styles acceptable here. Give us a shout if you're unsure. I'll get a couple of local beers out to the winner as a...

    Help with new regulator

Hi Anna, I've got one of these & what you describe is exactly right. I've actually got an issue with mine of a very slow leak even when not attached to any kegs. I think the problem is either internal or with the connection to the cylinder itself. Would you mind telling me what type of washer...

    Klarstein Mundschenk

Thanks for this. I've been looking to upgrade to a recirc system & this is too good a price to pass up. I've had a Klarstein Maischfest for about 3 years now & been very happy with it, especially durability so hopefully the Mundschenk follows suit!

    Secret Santa Reviews 2022

This one is mine. Thanks for the kind comments both. It's a style I'm unfamiliar with so not completely sure it's true to it but I like it. Glad the carbonation held up as I bottled straight from the keg & posted on the 8th! Recipe is attached if anyone is interested. The hop selection would...

    Secret Santa Reviews 2022

Well parsnip would not have been the first thing I guessed! Just checked out the recipe and that is amazing to get something so beery from such a low % of malt! Kudos & thanks for sharing!

    Secret Santa Reviews 2022

My first secret Santa beer is a 4.6% "Unconventional" stout. Lovely carbonation & a head that lasted from first to last sip. Quite restrained on roast character for a stout. I was getting a Guinness vibe from this one as it had a good bitterness & a bit of that "tang" you get from Guinness. I'm...

    Competition Schedule 2023

I haven't had a go at this for a couple of years so would love to judge a dark beer month. February?

    Secret Santa Review Thread 2021!

Secret Santa beer #2 & it's an oatmeal stout in great nick. Oatmeal cookies on the nose & the oats give a lovely creamy body as well. Beautifully brewed & wouldn't be surprised if this is a beer that's been brewed a fair few times. Very well balanced as there is a nice bitterness at the end...

    Secret Santa Review Thread 2021!

This is Secret Santa beer #1 for me. A 7% Old Ale (going by the description on the label). A lovely boozy fruitcake aroma that follows through to the taste. Some chocolate in the background along with some sherry. Everything is very well balanced & I very much enjoyed this beer. Thanks Santa!
