AG Brewday No. 2 - session ale

I did calibrate it, and my spirit thermometer as I felt my last mash was probably at a lower temp than the reading on the spirit last time, resulting in a drier and higher ABV beer than I should have had. Spirit was bang on at 0'C but read 103'c at 100'C. Digital was bang on at both. So I'm...

AG Brewday No. 2 - session ale

Having a go at the British Bitter recipe kit from Malt Miller today. http://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=1160 So far so good. A bit over on the mash temp but only one degree C.

First AG Brew day - SMaSH Citra IPA

OK for those who are interested. Just under 3 weeks in the bottle (bottled on 25th Feb after five days dry hopping) and I've had a taste. Very light in colour. Really dry and crisp, but those mango flavours from the citra are lovely. Not a complex beer as you'd expect from a SM&SH I guess. The...

First AG Brew day - SMaSH Citra IPA

Used Safale 05. It tastes great, hoppy and clean and it does taste 6.8% Looking around on the internet, seen others have reached 1.002 with the same yeast, so not so worried now. Like this one: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=221432

First AG Brew day - SMaSH Citra IPA

2 weeks in the fermenter, just read gravity for the first time, got 1.002 at 21'c. Checked and checked again. OG was 1.054, so that's an ABV of 6.8%! How is that possible? Brewsmith predicted 5.8%.

It's bubbling away nicely already. Cheers!

First AG Brew day - SMaSH Citra IPA

OK, all done and in the fermenter. Here are some pics. Thanks to Brewstew for the guide, invaluable. Got an OG of 1.054 which is bang on the Brewsmith Estimate. Also got 24.25L into the fermenter (target 23L) by tipping my boiler a little (5.5l dead space if not!).

First AG Brew day - SMaSH Citra IPA

I did wonder about using just one pack, may take a bit longer to get going but will be OK won't it? OK, will save a pack for the next brew. Thank you. Cheers for the hop advice as well, it's a bit daunting at first knowing what's best for what. So I'll take your advice. I used some Cascade to...

First AG Brew day - SMaSH Citra IPA

No, went with Safale 05. Haven't made a starter, thought I'd keep it as simple as possible first time out, so Brewsmith is telling me to use 14g, so a packet and a bit. First hops are in and it's smelling lovely in here!

First AG Brew day - SMaSH Citra IPA

Will do, just waiting for the boil to start now. Hops are smelling great just sat in their bowls! Mash lost hardly any temp so decent, have ended up with 1L less than expected for the boil, but not too unhappy with that, can adjust my efficiency now. Pre-boil OG 1.050 (temp adjusted)...

First AG Brew day - SMaSH Citra IPA

Will do, cheers. Yeah, I'm hoping for something like Oakham Citra, but expecting something less good! Thought I'd start with a SMaSH and then see what difference additions/changes make as I make another.

First AG Brew day - SMaSH Citra IPA

Mash temp bang on and Ph looks about 5.2 from the colour chart, so it's so far so good.

First AG Brew day - SMaSH Citra IPA

First AG brew day (much delayed), going to follow Brewstew's guide. Scaled up to 23l from this recipe: http://beerandbrewing.com/VaVFqB4AABJirjpT/article/smash-citra-ipa-recipe (though I've dropped the estimated ABV to 5.5%.) All ready to go. See you on the other side.

    Hop bag burst

Update. Had to go for it. Hops were floating on top but... Bottled today with some muslin over the end of the bottling stick to stop any solids going in, worked a treat. Got 21l out rather than the normal 22l so all in all happy. Last 4 litres were slow due to hoppage in the muslin. Thanks...

Great, yes it's air tight with a airlock on, so should be OK. Cheers!

    Hop bag burst

Hi all, help needed. Was transferring from primary to bottling bucket, and noticed a lot of solids coming into the bottling bucket. :-( I'd dry hopped with a couple of finishing hop sachets, one of which had burst. Was using a syphon, hadn't muslined the end as wasn't expecting a...
