    Brewing kits

I made a 'Make Your Own' American IPA kit on Sunday and after about 12 hours the airlock was going crazy. It stayed like that for about 24 hours but now there's no activity in the airlock that I've noticed. I've also noticed the temperature has dropped from 22c down to 18 but then our hallway...

    Brewing kits

I left my grapefruit IPA in the FV for the full 2 weeks then bottled it. I've put it in a warm room for 2 weeks then plan 2 move it to the garage for the final 2 weeks. The guy at my local home brew shop says the slight off flavour will mellow with time and it will still be enjoyable. I'm...

    Brewing kits

Thanks for the input guys. I've been out and bought a tap for my FV and will fit that tonight before making the brew.

    Brewing kits

Mine was tasty when I bottled it the other day but not as hoppy as I would like. I'm making an American IPA kit in the next few days and considering putting the hops in from the start plus an extra 50g of Cascade. If it turns out a hop bomb then I won't complain. athumb..

    Brewing kits

Yeah I thought so. That's very disappointing. Maybe from opening the FV too many times to check the gravity and adding the hops. When I bottled it, I used the trick of leaving an inch gap then squeezing the bottle till the beer reached the top before putting the caps on. Hopefully this...

    Brewing kits

Quick update. I bottled my pink grapefruit IPA today and it had developed a slight homebrewish smell and taste to it. I'm wondering if somewhere I'd let too much oxygen get into the brew or is that quite normal and just me being picky? Either way I've had worse pints from Wetherspoon's pubs...

    1st timer to brewing

Good news. I checked my pink grapefruit IPA earlier with a view to bottling it tomorrow as it will be 2 weeks in the FV then. There is still a good layer of krausen on top with the odd bubble still coming up. The gravity has dropped to 1004 which seems really low but I took a sample in the...

    1st timer to brewing

Thanks Matt, I did the water test on the hydrometer when I first bought it and it was definitely 1.000 so should be fine. I didn't realise it would take so long to be ready to drink so good job I've got a good supply of bottled ales in the cupboard and fridge. :thumba: I've also go a hard...

    1st timer to brewing

The beer didn't taste great; like you said David very bitter. I'm not sure how it would taste if it went bad. Sour I'm guessing. I'll leave it a week at least and then transfer it to a keg or bottles to see how it clears up in a couple of weeks in the garage.

    1st timer to brewing

Update, I took the lid off the FV and there was a nice thick krausen on top. I took a hydrometer reading and it was 1012 which is already at the final target reading, if my ebay hydrometer is accurate. I took a sample using a turkey baster (sanitized), added the hops and put the lid back on...

    1st timer to brewing

Hi David, 30c was the temperature in the porch. I did not have the sticky thermometer available right from the start so couldn't tell the exact temp of the brew. So are you saying, don't bother checking the gravity just yet? The hops were due to go in tomorrow as per MJ instructions. If the...

If the fermentation had stopped, would the temperature still be up around 23c?

    1st timer to brewing

David, It was in the porch for the first 3 days which got to around 30c during the day but dropped to around 18c at night. It's not been in the hallway which is 19c for the last 3 days. According to the internet the ideal brewing temp for this yeast (American West Coast) is between 15-22c...

    1st timer to brewing

I've got a nasty feeling my brew may have stalled, possibly due to having it in the porch which was too hot during the day. I brought it into the hallway which is much cooler but, it hasn't been giving off any beer smells for a few days now and the krausen production seems to have stopped too...

    1st timer to brewing

Ok, thanks guys, I'll move it upstairs to the spare room. I was worried my wife may moan about the smell but there's not much aroma coming from the porch TBH. I was planning to keep it in the garage the whole time but I'm concerned it may be a little too cool in there overall, especially at night.

    1st timer to brewing

Should there be any activity in the bubbler by now? The cider I made was constantly bubbling but mind you that was in a demijohn and only 1 gallon. There's a nice scum I can see on the inside of the fermenter bucket but I don't see any bubbles. I've put it in the porch which is more like a...

    1st timer to brewing

Yeah sorry I twigged in the end; it's been a long week. Hopefully, I'll wake up in the morning to a nice brewing aroma then. :laugh8:

What's MJ yeast? I used the one with the kit if that's the same. Oh yeah MJ = Mango Jack's - doh! Ignore this post.
