Fermentation tub, to fasten lid tight or not?

I know this is a very old thread, but I'd like to use demijohns (under air lock) to store my beer before bottling. Do you top them up to the neck? And how long can you keep them before bottling?

    WEIRDEST WINE EVER MADE?

I'll put it away and forget about it for a few years. Thanks for the tip.

    WEIRDEST WINE EVER MADE?

Just racked a gallon of Celery wine, which to my surprise tasted of celery! I like cooking with it, but I don't like it in wine. For comparison, I also racked a raisin wine which tasted good after 2 months, so after a year in storage it should be delicious. Perhaps I should stick to fruit...

Get an auto siphon they said. It'll be easy they said.

Received my Fermtech auto-syphon, which works much better than the one from Enolandia. The seal is made of fairly soft rubber, but still lets in a little bit of wine, but not enough to worry about. Tried heating the seal without success. I'm waiting for a syphon from Fermtech. Thanks for all the input.

Thanks for the advice. I tried this but the plastic is quite brittle and does not respond to thumb pressure. I tried pushing a rubber washer into the groove but that didn't work. I think I need a bush of some kind to push into the groove and force the seal to flare out slightly

A bit late adding to this thread, but I recently purchased one of those auto-syphons. It's an Italian model by enolandia. It was only £9.99 so I guess the price should have warned me that the quality might not be great. Although I like the principle of it, when I push the plunger it lets wine...

    Newish member from County Durham

Hi, I've just become a supporting member, so thought I'd update you on my progress. I made wine from kits about 40 years ago and drank it as soon as it was fermented. It was horrible! Now I am retired so I decided to start making wine again. I bought a few books second hand including First...
