    Cold conditioning...in THIS heat!

I just got a Fridge freezer for £10 from Gumtree and removed all the shelves in the fridge - it accepts even the tall Youngs Wide Neck Fermenter - and the freezer keeps my Hops safe. It is in the garage but hey - so am I most of the time lol.

    Time to mention Christmas

Funny you should say that. Now is the time to get one on the go. Comments welcome. I'm not sure about the apples... too few to have any effect? I haven't used them before (except in cider obviously) so no experience of their use. Hope this one works... not much to lose of it doesn't...

    What did you brew today?

Just about to start this one - in homage to England's "unexpected" performance the other night. HOME BREW RECIPE: Title: Thrashed Six - One Author: Alan Harper Brew Method: All Grain Style Name: Strong Bitter Boil Time: 90 min Batch Size: 23 liters (fermentor volume) FV Volume will be 17.2...

    Iodine test

I was investigating the use of Iodine to test the carbohydrate conversion and had trouble getting a small cheap source from local Pharmacies until I came across one in Amazon. It is a set of 30 odd cotton bud swabs with iodine in the stick - you break the stick and the iodine is released. I...

Have a go at simple AG

Hi Dave, Yes I loose lots in the boil too but I read somewhere - in here I think - that you should leave the lid OFF during the boil as there are some unwanted nasties driven off in the escaping steam that you don't want to condense on the lid and drip back in to the wort. If you know what...

First all grain attempt - FAIL

Hi Portreath, If you are still having Mash Tun problems then may I suggest you modify a FV to do the same job. I had a go and posted how I did it on here (https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/threads/mash-tun-advice.74387/#post-716832) and it works pretty well. I get good conversion efficiency...

Have a go at simple AG

Yes I may need to look at that. I did an early brew and followed the calculations set out in John Palmer's book (http://howtobrew.com/book/section-2/what-is-malted-grain/mash-efficiency) and plugged the result into my recipe builder defaults. I haven't looked at it since which is why ot came...

Have a go at simple AG

========================================== Hi Dave, I plugged your idea into the Recipe Generator in Brewer's Friend web and it screamed too alcoholic (9.5%+) and bitter (unless you wanted it that way) so I tweaked the values to get it within the assumed style of a strong American Ale (based on...

    Cooler MashTun Tips

------------------------------- Update on that - I now have constructed a Sparging Arm to help me easily do the sparging from the PB. The arm is a selection of copper parts bought at B&Q that are soldered together to form a long tailed T with right angled bends and flexible copper pipe...

    peroni help please

================================== Hi Foxbat, I took another look at MyPeroni recipe and gave it a tweek - partly due to your suggestion and partly due to other info I found that suggests Saaz is the preferred hops - though I read that they use Hop Oil in their brew. I chose to keep some of...

    peroni help please

My favourite beer - of a lager type - is Peroni Azzurro so, since it is also my wife's fav beer, I have had a go at a clone of Peroni which is following. I plan to make this starting Monday 18th June so we shall see how it turns out. I will be able to chill it down now I have a Fridge Freezer...

    Mashing out and Oxygenating wort

My suggestion is if you gave a spare PB lying about - it may even be the one you will eventually use for the brew you are making - heat your sparge water first to about 10 C more than you will use for sparging. Put the sparge water in the PB and keep the lid on. It should stay hot enough to...

    Cooler MashTun Tips

I'm just a newbie at all this but have read many, many entries on the Sparging process on here and elsewhere and as a result my very simple system, for me anyway, is to put the heated sparge water (80+C) into a pressure barrel, screw on the top and lift that onto the higher level so I can...

HOW TO GUIDE: STC1000 Build (inc wiring diagrams)

Just in case anyone was wondering about the terminals and the wires I have deduced the following: Heating Terminal 5 = Live mains IN Heating Terminal 6 = Switched Live mains OUT Cooling Terminal 7 = Live mains IN Cooling Terminal 8 = Switched Live mains OUT Sometimes lots of wires with the...

A few more novice questions after bottling my 3rd batch

As for the priming sugar: When I have used it in the past - for priming Cider in the bottles - I used the narrow packets of white sugar "gathered" from coffee shops e.g. Starbucks or Costa's one per 500ml bottle. I retired from work - where we had an in-house Costas so I had regular access to...

    DryHopping Problem?

Thanks guys. I did determine that I should have fermented first before the dry hopping. My fault entirely. I will not make the same mistake again. The hops did bring in some strange foreign yeast infection and the wort was a perfect breeding ground. I took the decision to tip it all down...
