Where do you store your malt?

I would rather have air-tight than non-air-tight but I doubt it makes a big enough difference to justify swapping if you already have them.

Where do you store your malt?

It says they're made of polypropylene which has high heat tolerance and is (ASFAIK) regarded as one of the safest forms of plastic for food. Yohgurt pots are made out of it. Why they don't mention food safe on the website I don't know, we'd have to ask.

Where do you store your malt?

SolentPlastics do a range of properly air tight boxes (the Really Useful Boxes are not air tight). I haven't used one yet but this is what I will be ordering: https://www.solentplastics.co.uk/70-ltr-xl-iris-airtight-clear-plastic-storage-box-with-black-base/

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

Nice, thanks. There are a lot of ways to skin this cat :) If I get around to it I'd like to set it up so I can specify a recipe and have it import fermentation temperature for the recipe from Brewers Friend, but knowing me I'll porobably lose interest before I get that far.

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

Thanks, good point. I'll be writing the script myself so I'll have complete control.

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

Does anyone use the iSpindle for automation or are most people just looking at the output? I spent yesterday hacking about and set up this simple python server and I'm planning on using the temperature readings to turn on/off some RF controlled plug sockets to control my fridge temp. I looked at...

What does 'Hazy' bring to the table

As I understand it the difference is when you do the dry hopping. Late dry hopping post-fermentation is the classic 'dry-hop for aroma' while NEIPAs usually seem to have a big dry-hop during peak fermentation and some sort of biotransformation magic happens that gives them their characteristic...

    Maxi Chiller

Oh sorry, completely forgot about this! How does £80 sound? It's a Maxi 110 btw.

    Maxi Chiller

I do but I'm in London so unless you're coming down I'm not sure it'll work, the things are heavy

How do you measure your mash temperature?

That's a good point and I admit I haven't actually tested it but I will next time I set the kit up. My issue is not just with probe accuracy but also with probe position. I am not confident that the kettle probe being right on the floor of the vessel where the heat enters is a sensible position...

How do you measure your mash temperature?

This all sounds a bit too sensible to me, I'll just keep buying more and more thermometers. When I have enough I can use a normal distribution to remove outliers and an average of those that remain will be the one true temperature.

How do you measure your mash temperature?

I can't calibrate but asssuming the offset is constant I could account for it. The real issue is that there is drift between that and the thermometers at the top of the mash. I suspect this is partly from temperature gradient but also that the Klarstein probe is in a poor position right at the...

How do you measure your mash temperature?

I'm really struggling with getting temperature readings I trust while mashing. I BIAB using a Klarstein mash kettle. The kettle has a thermometer which is a nub sticking slightly up from the base next to the heating element. I don't really trust this at all. I have been suplimenting this with...

For Sale - 3 Way Gas Management Board

I'll take the board if it's still going. It'll be a while before I build my kegerator but a that price I can't resist! Will need postage to London though. Guess I may as well take the single regulator too :)

    Kit v All Grain Costs

I'd also add that from my (not hugely extensive) experience doing kits i never got 40 pints, partly due to wastage and because they come out better at slightly lower dilution so they aren't quite as cheap as they appear anyway. And as noted the beer won't be as good, particularly hoppy styles...

    Vital Spark clone help

Thanks. I'll have to do my best with what I've got right now! I'm not expecting to get it bang on first time anyway

    Vital Spark clone help

Since trying Vital Spark by Fyne Ales last year I've been eager to try and reproduce it. It's combination of smooth roast malt with APA style hops is pretty special. . From the link above I've had a crack at a recipe on Brewer's Friend but I'm after any suggestions on how to improve it. In...

Adnams make Mosaic yes, first time I tried the hop was in that beer. Very nice.

    Weighing Kegs for level checking?

The obvious problem I can se there is that the scales (presumably) won't hold their zero when they turn off. You'll have to record the complete weight of the filled keg when it goes in and then track the difference in weight to see how much beer has been pulled I think. There are these if you...
