    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

I have a batch on now and reporting every 15 minutes, absolutely regularly - as it has done with earlier batches. Distance between the router and the iSpindel is about 15 feet, with the thickness of two brick walls between them, in a plastic FV. The reported signal strength varies between -57...

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

There are two suggested solutions... 1. Electrically insulate the lid of the FV, from the body of the FV. 2. A passive antenna system - small receiving antenna inside the FV, short bit of coax leading out of the FV, sealed where it exits, then the top end of the coax stripped back a little way...

On my WEMOS, it is at the top, by the charging socket. Look a wiggly track on the pcb, like castellations - that is the antenna. The water is the least of the problems for reception. For the size of the unit, it puts out a very strong signal.

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

I am now on my third brew, using the iSpindle and it is absolutely great, it being so easy to monitor it at a distance. I have always struggled to read with any accuracy an hydrometer and the iSpindel produces such great accuracy. I would point out a couple of things to be aware of... The XL...

You do not necessarily need to the use of a 3D printer, not all versions of the hardware layout, need the printed sled. The V4 PCB plus 'big XL' PET doesn't need a sled. That PCB needs to be slightly filed along both long sides, plus the bottom corners to be rounded to fit the bottom of the PET

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

Without recharging the iSpindel, because it still had a good level of charge remaining from fermenting my 5gall of wine (begun 20 days ago), I started a 5gall batch of Wilko Geordie Scottish Export on Wednesday. The fermentation went ahead well, until yesterday lunch (24 hours later), when it...

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

The reported voltage, has no bearing on how long it is able to send its data, so I would suspect that battery. Torchy in the UK, as a source is well recommended, they have a good reputation. From memory of the circuit, I think the resistors set the reported voltage - get those wrong and you...

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

Right settings for what? If you mean the voltage calibration, there is a factor in the iSpindel's calibration screen, to adjust that. You will need an accurate voltmeter to check the voltage, whilst at the same time check what the iSpindel is actually reporting as the battery voltage. Mine was...

Here is the battery voltage graph. The graph show a steep initial fall in voltage, then it becomes less steep.. The steps are due to the sensor input sensor having limited resolution of 0.005v by the looks of it.

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

I don't yet know how long it will last, because its still going strong. It is reporting in every 15 minutes, continueously for the past 17 days. I gave the new 3400mA battery a full charge before turning it on and its still reporting a very respectable 4.080v - which I know is accurate, because...

    Digital scales

I bought a set of those, along with a set of calibration weights - to make up e-liquid. The scales were spot on accurate.

I wonder if anyone using the iSpindel with Unidots, has added a alcohol graph to their Ubidots graph page? It would need to be calculated within Ubidots, based on the starting SG and the present SG. It's a week or so now, since my, supervised for the first time by the iSpindel completed. I...

    Bottle Brush Recommendation Please

Don't put your plastic bottles in a dishwasher, or in too hot water, they will melt.

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

Well, to be perfectly honest, yes I do. It uses a TV receiver dongle and an home made antenna, made from coat hanger wire, mounted on a section of 20mm plastic conduit, with a sort of hook at the top end. I just reach it out of the bedroom window and hook it onto my gutter. I'm on the N / W...

Should we put a stop to homebrew?

Yep, much less aggravation if you learn to fix things yourself where you can and a massive saving to be made. You can easily pay for the tools to do the work, with what you save on employing someone to do the work. I must have several thousands of pounds worth of tools and equipment, bought over...

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

I have a weather station and part of what it records is the indoor temperature. The indoor temperature remained steady throughout the fermentation. My FV wasn't insulated or on a heating panel, so it must be an exothermic reaction.

Should we put a stop to homebrew?

I am very much a product of that era, I do 99% of all the work and repairs around here, on my home, the car, caravan, electronics, electrics, plumbing and heating around the place. I tend not to trust anyone to do work for me unsupervised, besides - if something fails I can usually have it fixed...

Should we put a stop to homebrew?

Well, 80/90's since I was last involved, but our output was as good then or better than the commercially produced stuff. All the later, better equipment has done, is made it so much easier to produce good quality output. I will say that kits and equipment were much more easily sourced back...

    iSpindel - digital WiFi hydrometer

That is exactly what my red wine did - it began at 1.080, then gradually increased to 1.090, before the fermentation began in earnest. I am not entirely convinced it was due to the bubbles though and the temperature remained stable within a fraction of a degree, so not that either. Once the...
