Brewzilla thread to share knowledge, experiences and good practice

Personally I like keeping only around 1cm depth above the top plate and not going over the top overflow. I gives me the feelgood factor there is not too much of a void beneath the grainbed, giving a bit more of a margin for error in avoiding scorched wort.

    Which all in one?

Yes - a sparge heater is a nice addition to an all in one system - I'm guessing the name "All in One but you need a sparge heater" didn't quite have the ring to it the Marketting departments were looking for ! :laugh8: Coming from 1 gall batches and making a right mess of the kitchen / cooker...

Brewzilla thread to share knowledge, experiences and good practice

Agreed - I was about to say that I adjust the low flow circulation to maintain about 1cm depth of wort spread across the whole of the top plate, therefore giving confidence the wort will drain down through all holes in the plate. I even rotate the plate slightly every now to reposition those...

    Which all in one?

Same here - it's a "me" thing though I know as I'm paranoid about cleanliness / sanitization. Many brewers use plate chillers or counterflow coils very successfully but I stick with immersion chilling as I don't like my wort going places I can't see lol. I did start to look at other methods as...

Hmmmmm, maybe your clip is a bit more "clippy" than mine 🙂. I'm using the V 3.1.1 now. It doesn't take much force on the top pipe to pop the clip and slide down. It's a bit of a faff but maybe from the start position the top section of the pipe slightly lower with the clip already disengaged

Pic below of the strainer, just a tea-strainer with arm removed. The current design of the Robobrew overflow pipe with the clip is a bit rudimentary and I have heard they are looking to improve it and in a way that previous models can accommodate it...... time will tell ! I once pulled it up...

    Xmas beer modification.....

Sounds good. I do a winter warmer and add spices. For a pre boil volume of 28 litres I add 15g Ginger paste, 2 sticks of Cinnamon, 5g Allspice powder and the grated peel of an orange - no white pith. Some might want to up quantities but I like it subtle /not overpowering and the flavour does...

    Which all in one?

Yep, David Heath has done a lot of comparison videos which cover a lot of ground. I'm a Robobrew user so will obviously be a little biased but I originally considered it against the Grainfather. Both are very decent bits of kit, similar in many ways but the savings the Robobrew gave could not...

The mesh over the top of the overflow tube is well worth it, I've never had an issue by not having one over the pump inlet, but if you can fit one in then no harm at all. I'll possibly put a video up on YT soon of the whole process as the main thing I see missing on YT but also a lot of...

Pulling from the tap and with enough in there to void tilting the brewzilla forward is best from reducing crud / trub ...... but there's other opportunities to avoid it further on down the line however you end up doing it.

    FV - Siphon or Tap

My response was slightly tongue in cheek, hence the lol, but yeah I just hate using syphons..... which like taps can leak and need to be cleaned also wink.... But my main reason for going to the effort of fitting a tap (with racking barb) to my fermenter is my quest for simple, quick and Oxygen...

Yep a key reason for whirpooling is from larger brewery set ups to clump debris together and as a hopping stage, however the effectiveness of the clumping in a brewzilla type device with a false bottom can be slightly limited. It can help though. Overall though, for keeping things as clear as...

    FV - Siphon or Tap

I'm an Engineer too..... why complicate things by trying to create a vacuum to drag something up and over when gravity and a hole is a lot less problematic lol

    FV - Siphon or Tap

I fit one of these...... https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/ss-brewtech-racking-arm/ ...... right at the bottom of a plastic fermenter tub, and then I angle the arm to approx the 2:00 o'clock position. This keeps the inlet at about the right level above the crud. It also assists when I do...

I used the Brewmonk whirlpool arm (which fits fine) on my Brewzilla for the first time the other day and was amazed at how much it sped up the cooling cycle. I usually cool with just the standard cooling coil sat in the wort and running cold water through it and it previously took 35+ mins to...

    Sanitiser help

Chemsan user here - looks to be one of the most easily popular / available online. Simple to mix, needs no rinsing, and my understanding it is the direct / UK alternative to Starsan..... some folk might even mean Chemsan when they say Starsan.

    Yeast in wort??

+1 to that. I use plastic fermenter tubs and occasionally there is no bubble activity in the airlock at all - but I can see there is a krausen head forming and gravity readings taken a few days later prove things are happening. There's no harm if the CO2 is escaping through the lid seal. And...
