    Curry...!!

Friday night is often home made curry night. For an Xmas pressie one year the wife got me (and her) a voucher for a local cookery school Indian curry night. https://www.foodworkscookeryschool.co.uk/courses/?event_time=evening&event_style= It was awesome, an evening class of around 14 and a...

How do you track your brews?

Spreadsheet fan here too ! 🙂 Not only with timings and water quantities calculated for individual recipes but each with individual links to my "stock" availability of ingredients too. I think I may be addicted to spreadsheets.......... yes I have one for Xmas present spend / distribution too...

    Cinnamon?

Yep, sorry my response was on the basis of a general winter brew, not a particular other recipe. My Brew grain bill was Maris Otter / Pale as the bulk of the bill, balanced up with a bit of crystal malt and then a very small amount (no more than 1%) black malt to add a touch of colour / flavour...

    Cinnamon?

Deffo worth doing. I do a Winter warmer brew and to add a little warmth / spice based on a 23 litre batch I put : 45 mins before end of boil - 15g Ginger paste 15 mins before end of boil - 2 sticks cinnamon, 5g allspice, grated peel from a small orange (no white pith) This was on a...

    Whirlpool

I was eyeing up plate and counterflow chillers to speed cooling up but I'm a cleanliness freak and don't like not being able to see what needs cleaning, so adding the whirlpool arm has been a game changer with the immersion coil so I'm sticking with that from now on.

Brewzilla thread to share knowledge, experiences and good practice

That's a big brew :laugh8: I've come close to a boil over in my Robobrew with lesser qtys ! I've been meaning to do a Proper Job brew for a while and have found a couple on-line recipes, I also have a work link to the actual brewery and was going to try and tap up their Brewer for some...

    Whirlpool

I love DIY home brew kit ! Nice one ! Glad you went for 12Volt as well clapa If that's an immersion chiller in that pic then you should find your cooling time dramatically reduces. I added a brewmonk whirlpool arm to my robobrew and cooling time reduced form around 40 mins to only 16 mins. I...

    What did you brew today?

Brewdog's Punk IPA - from their free recipe book. It's a regular monthly brew and I'd like to think I've pretty much nailed it with all the practice 🙂 , I always have one keg of this on the go as it's a family favourite, with 4 drinkers in the household we certainly get through it.

    pressure barrel/keg needed

You are looking at a bit of an outlay to go the Keg route - but IMHO it's well worth it. Top end (and I'd fully recommend getting decent kit) you are looking at £80 - £90 for an AEB 19 litre keg, £50 for a decent CO2 regulator (ODL make), around £20 for CO2 gas (plus possibly approx £30 deposit...

    Interpreting recipes

I've done Brews in a Brewzilla Robobrew both with and without a Mash out and have not noticed a perceivable difference in the outcome. I have always found my sparging to be slightly faster rather than slower than preferred (I use both lower screens and the top screen in the Robobrew) so I would...

    Factoring in Equipment Losses

I base my brews around wanting to get 19 litres in to my kegs and use the following losses for my Robobrew - 1 ltr per kg for grain absorption, up to 1 ltr per 100g hops (I use a hop spider), 3.5l to 4.5l for boil evaporation, 2.5 ltr deadspace in Robobrew below tap (if I'm not tilting it) and...

Brewzilla thread to share knowledge, experiences and good practice

The micro pipework allows the Grainfather to do a smaller batch as it brings the overflow pipework down to a position that will still allow proper overflow with a lot lower grain / wort level in the system. You don't want to go much smaller than 10litres as a small batch though due to the amount...

Brewzilla thread to share knowledge, experiences and good practice

Yep, in most heated vessels there will always be a variance across individual zones, especially a tall narrow water column with heaters at the bottom and a clump of grain near the middle / top like a Brewzilla / Grainfather etc. There can be approx 3 deg C difference between near the heaters on...

Brewzilla thread to share knowledge, experiences and good practice

The temp probe is right at the bottom by the heating elements and that whole area retains a lot of heat so when cooling there will be quite a bit of difference between the heart of the brew (where the cooling coil is) and where the Brewzilla temp probe is. When heating I find there is a 3 deg C...

Is this ready for the barrel yet?

Best general guide is if gravity readings stay same for 3 days then you're done - whether its been in fermenter for a week or 3 weeks. If that's only taken a few days to get there then always best to leave a little longer anyway but if you keg then thats a good place to leave it to develop...

Brewzilla thread to share knowledge, experiences and good practice

I'd say the best approach is to only mod your gear once you have settled on your preferred process (eg circulate or stir during the mash) and as Foxy above particularly points out "once you are used to your SVB" which is key. I use my overflow tube religiously as I prefer to continuously...
