    Bit of a mistake

That's an interesting conundrum. My initial thoughts are that the fruit has already given up some of it's flavour so won't contribute as much as "raw". Having said that, the fruit from a Rumtopf does have quite a flavour especially with that rum. Any alcohol left in the fruit may contribute...

Is there a good Perry kit out there?

@Bzee No I haven't. I've looked at a few but haven't tried any. I think about it every once in a while and maybe this year I'll bite the bullet?

    Knife Set

The Vorda bread knife is an absolute joy to use. I look forward to having some really soft bread/rolls so it can be cut in a straight line! If the rest of the range is this good then I might get the filleting knife on my next (decadely) visit.

    In the freezer...

Also, when I made homebrew in the past, one of the best I ever made was christened "bottom of freezer" wine. No idea what all the fruit was but roughly 4kg (frozen) of very mixed fruit from the bottom of the freezer. All into a bucket added water, campden tablet and stirred for a few days...

    In the freezer...

Can't comment on what the rosehips would contribute, but the elderberries have loads of tannin and it takes a long time for that to subside to acceptable levels, patience is the key. The fruit would hopefully level things out. I tried something similar, dried dark fruit and frozen black/blue...

    Knife Set

Amazingly the best bread knife I've ever owner was from Ikea! It's the only Ikea knife I have so I can't comment on the rest. I have some Sabatier, Pro Cook and some unlabeled. What have learned over the years, cheap knifes require cheap sharpeners that remove A LOT of material in use. My...

Equipment For Sale ISpindel bits for free

If you don't get someone to collect and change your mind about posting then I'll take everything, except the batteries, just because that can cause issues with carrier rules!

How long will wine last with NovaTwist screw caps?

As @the baron says the reason for storing bottles on their side is to keep the cork wet, if you don't have a cork then store as you wish. The main consideration would be to keep them at a steady lowish temperature and in the dark.

How long will wine last with NovaTwist screw caps?

I can say that Novatwist are good for 12 months, as that's the longest I've been able to keep any! I age my wine in demijohns and then bottle. I can also attest to them being reusable, I've not done a count per cap, but at least half a dozen refills, maybe a few more for some.

Picture or Video of the day.

I've seen this before and even when you know where it is (because it was highlighted then) it's almost invisible. It's not far off the centre of the image. Still can't see it? Then you're it's lunch!

    How do water softeners work?

@Hazelwood Brewery That drawer is a very interesting way of improving internal storage! If that's all the consumables then I think even SWMBO could cope, maybe... She'll still be afraid of breaking it though. So NOT for brewing? I'll need a "raw" feed somewhere as well then.

    How do water softeners work?

We've been thinking of getting a water softener on and off for the last few years, for the whole house not just for brewing! Appart from the initial costs what are the running costs like and how complicated to replenish consumables? I don't know anyone who's got modern equipment and the old...

LOVE Brewing " Spiritworks Artisan Flavouring Gift Boxes" Giveaway!

Not an easy decision to make, but Fruity Gin Mix would be my first choice, probably going to have to try a few now!

    Memories anyone?

So, a friend of a friend of a friend etc, was doing some clearing out and remembered that I was a home brewer and was wondering if I'd be interested in some "old" homebrew stuff she'd found. My inner magpie immediately said yes and a few days later I received this plus 2 demijohns, Inside...

    "Left-overs" Mixed Fruit Wine

That's looking promising! If I was doing it, I'd get that strained but others may diasagree. What colour is the liquid, looking rose?

Patches that my normal cleaning isn't removing -

I'm trying to clean some old demijohns that I inherited some time ago, there are a few "patches" that my normal cleaning isn't removing, any recommendations? So I'd normally use Astonish Oxyclean and StarSan (or alternative). We're in a very hard water area. I've tried an overnight soak, I've...

    Fly contamination.

We've also had a plague of flies this year, fungus gnats, fruit flies and house flies. All house plants now have AT LEAST 1/2" of gravel above the compost. We also got some fly traps and fly paper around the house. The most effective we've found, through experiementation and exasperation, are...

    "Left-overs" Mixed Fruit Wine

One of the best fruit wines I ever made was from the bottom of the freezer, couldn't 100% identify all of the fruit but all red/dark red/black. OK this was over 20 years ago but it was bloody marvelous. Only trouble was that I only got 6 bottles out of it. Method as you describe, if I...
