    BIAB - Numpty Questions

Well i had an issue with my last brew in that I used a malt pipe for the 1st time in my Klarstein mash kettle. Ended up with a blocked bazooka filter and it was a right pain to sort out, so for my next brew I’m going to try putting a BIAB bag over the malt pipe in an attempt to act as a sort of...

Which salts and in what quantities would you recommend mate?

Connect a hose from the cold tap to one end, connect a hose to the other and either run it into a drain or if you’re ecco you could collect it. I go for a medium flow rate which seems to work fine for me. Another option is to use a pond pump submerged into a builders bucket that’s filled with...

I did exactly the same mate, cost me £26 from B&Q for a coil of 10mm copper pipe, straightened the first 600mm then wrapped the rest round a paint tin, left the last 300mm straight and that was more or less it finished and it works great.

Yeah I’m leaning towards that, but after seeing the Verdant in action i was impressed and just wondered if it was feasible to recover-reuse? Saying that it’s only £4 for a satchet so why bother?

I saw something like that on Youtube, but doesn’t that just multiply the amount of trub in the bottom of the fermenter? I have quite a lot as it is.

How do you seperate the yeast from the trub?

Yeah it was mate, got to work immediately then just kept going, but i have a question for the more learned amongst us on here. Fermentation is done and today i intend to dry hop with 100g each of Calypso and Jarrylo, but my question is this: I will dry hop for 3 days then close transfer to the...

    IPA brewing temperature

My preference is the fish tank style submersible heaters as they are in direct contact with the wort, usually in the centre so they give a good overall heat and ran through a controller they will do the job. Just depends what type of FV you have.

It’s my 1st time using it but so far I’m impressed. A made up a little starter with some of the “cooled” wort and added the yeast for around 30 minutes and it seemed to work OK.

    IPA brewing temperature

Can’t agree wioth this at all mate. My Fermzilla is in a very well insulated garage where the ambient temps at this time of year rarely get above 14 degrees and that’s no where near warm enought for an IPA yeast. For an IPA yeast such as US-04 0r 05, Verdant (which I’m using now) or a US west...

    IPA brewing temperature

That’s what i do mate, but instead of using tape i use cling film wrapped round the whole vessel as it doesn’t leave sticky residue on your FV. Also place a bit of foam or any other type of insulation on the outer side of the probe, so that it’s only reading the wort temps and not your boats...

    Brewelder’s 1st Brewday

Anyway, it’s day 3, just got back in from work and found this: A nice healthy Krause, the Verdant is feeding away quite nicely so up to now I’m well pleased with myself.

Well I’ve just gone for spring water as I’m new to all this and didn’t want to get too ahead of myself. But, for future reference, how would i treat bottled (spring_ water and what with? Quantities etc?

    Hole in my hlt

It works mate. I’ve worked on many ships at sea and when you go inside the tanks or chambers you will always find (an approved) hole repair kit, which consists of a set of wooden spikes and a hammer for banging in any holes that crop up. It’s the done practice and it works.

Haven’t taken any photo’s but there’s a lovely Krause developing right now, temp is a constant 20.5 degrees and i forgot to mention yesterday that i used spring water for the mash and sparge, so no tap water involved and no water treatment added.
