Is it just the yeast you are using and the amount of priming sugar?

Same for me. Once the primary and secondary fermentations are complete I don't think you need to worry too much about where you keep the bottles, in my experience. Just keep them out of sunlight, in a box where it doesn't get much above 22C.

I use this brush from Ikea plus hot water and elbow grease. Or possibly leave them soaking in Oxiclean for a couple of hours or overnight. It will shift almost anything.

In my experience it depends on the recipe. But quite often I've cracked in to a bottle four or five days after bottling (just for testing purposes you understand) and it has been quite drinkable. They do improve after a couple of weeks but who can wait that long?
