Hop Spider or no Hop Spider

They are murder to clean indeed. A big solid clump that ends up getting stuck in the mesh. The more I think about it, the more I lean towards this theory. Possibly to do with exposed surface area. If there is a large semi-solid clump of sodden mass in the Spider, then only the outside of it is...

Hop Spider or no Hop Spider

Thanks all, backing up my original thoughts. Will give a try without the Spider and see if there is a return to form! If it works I'll try and flog the offending item on eBay. I would post it on the forum but might have talked myself out of a sale. I'll try to get the recipe up when I get a...

Hop Spider or no Hop Spider

I did consider that, but my concern is that the loss in hop profile was so pronounced I'd end up having to lump tons of hop in there.

Hop Spider or no Hop Spider

It was one of these I bought (not this exact one, but same style): https://www.amazon.co.uk/DIYARTS-Stainless-Reusable-Homebrew-Strainer/dp/B07TRLBV7G/ref=sr_1_13?keywords=hop+spider&qid=1571823769&sr=8-13 Pellet hops used rather than leaf. I did agitate them several times during the boil, not...

Hop Spider or no Hop Spider

Hi All, I bought a stainless steel Hop Spider a few months ago and have used it in a few brews since and it seemed like a good idea to save on cleaning etc. at the end of the shift. However. The last brew I did was my first batch of the Greg Hughes APA. Normally this has a great hop profile...

Greg Hughes Home Brew Beer book: what shall I brew?

I'm sure it was regular porridge oats. I entered the ingredients on Get Er Brewed's recipe builder and selected just Oats, I'm sure. Also used US-05 for the yeast as I prefer dried to liquid. Would thoroughly advise using Greg Hughes book and GEB recipe builder. No waste and storage not an issue...

Greg Hughes Home Brew Beer book: what shall I brew?

    Starsan dilution rate.

+1 for this. I use on of those syringes you get free with Calpol for the kids. Two 5ml squirts in 5 litres of cold water. Lasts from Brew day to Bottling day. Sometimes beyond if I've got two brews in quick succession. Slightly off topic, but is there still a Starsan drought in the UK? Remember...

Dry Yeast for Amarillo Single Hop Ale

I would go for US-05. Will let the single hop of choice shine through. To be fair I've never used S-33. I generally stick to S-04 for British style and US-05 for American style beers. Apart from one time I tried Lallemand Windsor, but wasn't a fan.

    Just beer

I tend to brew without much fuss I guess. All grain, albeit from custom kits from Get Er Brewed. Pretty simple 3 vessel method and I take temp readings and OG/FG readings etc., but I don't really go in for water chemistry, HERMS coils, wort recirculation or anything too fancy. Liquid yeast and...

    Half Price Big Mouth Bubblers

I really like them for easy cleaning and for being able to chuck in dry hops easily. Apparently you can reverse the sealing ring on the lid and it stops them popping off. Personally I just chucked two of those flexible weights you can strap round your ankles on top. Or two (precariously...

    Single hop series from Geterbrewed

Totally agree with this also. Armed with the Greg Hughes bible and access to GEB's kit customiser I have a great old time. Like others have mentioned, storage space and potential long intervals between brews makes this way much more suitable. Also, compared to the pre-built kits it works out a...

Cheers mate, just seen this. Seems to be no UK delivery right enough though. My epic quest continues :laugh8:

Beer Hawk Giving Up Home Brew?

Been keeping an eye out for another 6.5 gal Big Mouth Bubbler fermenter from them but they haven't restocked for ages. Shame because it looks like they were sole UK distributors.

    Hello fellow Brewers

Up until this point of my life I had no idea there was such a thing as a Mango Chutney Barrel. Looks a decent size though athumb..

    Refermentation question

Thanks for the replies guys. The bourbon soaked wood chips is meant to mimic bourbon barrels according to the recipe notes and the secondary 6 month conditioning is to introduce slight oxidation mimicking barrels aging I think. Fingers crossed this works, 6 months is a long time to wait for...
