Sorbates and sulphites and secondary fermentation, oh my!

Cheers LED_ZEP, SWMBO's being sent to Tesco, I say "being sent" - I mean asked pleadingly to go but I think chances are slim at the mo given the deluge of rain here in Bristol. Lowicz syrup, sweetener, 4 for £6 and a pumpkin.

Sorbates and sulphites and secondary fermentation, oh my!

Thanks AXW123. Nice one, I'd completely forgotten about that brand. I had a bottle of their cherry syrup years ago. I'll ask SWMBO to keep her eyes peeled and see if we can track some down. Cheers.

Sorbates and sulphites and secondary fermentation, oh my!

Hi Anna, I'll have a closer look at the ingredients and compare brands but I think that's going to be the plan. I'll post quantities once I've done it in case anyone wants to know and I'll do a taste test with watered down apple juice and see if I can come up with a rough specific gravity...

Sorbates and sulphites and secondary fermentation, oh my!

I personally enjoy a dry cider and on the rare occasion I do fancy a sweet one I'll use sugar syrup. The reason I want to sweeten (and carbonate) is so i can give some to friends who are only used to sweet commercial stuff and not your flat, dry, toe-curling scrumpies. Ha. I've lacked the...

Sorbates and sulphites and secondary fermentation, oh my!

Thanks Cwrw666, I do like liquorice but in toffee rather than my brews so I'll avoid that. Cheers.

Sorbates and sulphites and secondary fermentation, oh my!

Thanks Chippy Tea, nothing harsh about it, I appreciate it. I'd have been annoyed had I gone for it and it not worked. Is there a consensus in regards to a preference between Stevia or sucralose? I think I'll just use one of them to sweeten instead and save mucking about with flavours for...

Sorbates and sulphites and secondary fermentation, oh my!

Hi, I intend on sweetening and flavouring some cider using 'no added sugar' squash. I've found one which only has sucralose in it (I'm not a fan of saccharin, acesulfame or aspartame) but my issue is that it has preservatives in it and I want to also add sugar to bottle condition and end up...

    Bottle Brush Recommendation Please

Glad to be of service @Petrolhead . The first time I did it, it was a real 'eureka moment'. "... a cure for something" made me chuckle - been there.

    Dry hoping

I've only used saaz once when i did a pilsner years ago so I'm not really familiar with it and i've not made that kit in a while either but i think the standard for dry hopping is 30 - 60g but then if you're a bit of a 'hophead' you could easily double that, time plays a factor too. What it all...

    Dry hoping

Use the same weight-wise as you would pellets, they just take up more space. People may say there's a slight difference in flavour but as long as you're a mere mortal and not a beer judge I doubt you will notice.

    Sweet mead help please

Hi, This is only my 3rd or 4th attempt at a mead but my first in a long time plus my first attempt at a sweet mead, so i was hoping for some guidance. I'm looking to make a sweet mead with as little fuss as possible. The yeast I'm going to use apparently goes to 14% so i was wondering whether...

    Bottle Brush Recommendation Please

Something I used to use to get that horrible dried on gunk off was dried rice in a small amount of soapy solution but the rice was a nightmare to get out. But, the thing I use now instead is about 500 (a third of a pot) 4.5mm (.177) steel bbs. I still wet em up with a few table spoons of soapy...

Moving cider off sediment / lees

I shouldn't think so. I think it depends on whether you have degassed it or not and the headspace in the vessel that you move it to. I moved mine out of the primary and off the lees into a plastic 5l flagon, squeezed all the air out and then shook it like crazy, partially to de-gas and partially...

    First brew questions!

You said you've bottled it up, what did you do prior to that? What were the ingredients and the quantities and what did you do with them? Did it definitely ferment? Not looking to be patronising, but with such little information it's hard to know what you've done. With the little info given, I'd...

Thanks guys, I've have a problem with the stabiliser bring extremely potent. I posted a thread in the wine section. Shall I repost it here?

    Stabiliser

Hi, I recently made a wilko cab-sav kit and apart from the seemingly customary eruption on topping it up, all went well until it was time to add the stabiliser. On dissolving it I remarked to the mrs how strong it smelt and that I was reluctant to add it but being new to wine kits i thought it...

Hi Everybody, I've a fair bit of experience brewing dozens of kits & turbo ciders, maybe a dozen extracts, just a couple of AGs and a fair few other things. I think I have a decent understanding of the fundamental scientific principles of brewing and I'm now looking to broaden my knowledge...
