First ever brew I Sunday way

Yes, I use a couple of them all the time and they're surprisingly accurate (not sure if that's consistant with the stick-on strips or if I just struck lucky).

First ever brew I Sunday way

Towels will be fine, imo it will be ok without but for peace of mind some insulation would be a good idea, it will help prevent it getting too warm in the daytime. Maybe throw a few plastic bottles 3/4 full of water in the freezer tonight and if it goes over 20 deg tomorrow then wrap one or two...

First ever brew I Sunday way

There's no need to heat, if you want to avoid temps going too low wrap it in a blanket, 16 deg won't do any harm. Fermentation makes heat, if it's insulated it will get warm by its self and then tomorrow daytime it will get even hotter. High fermentation temperatures will make un-lagerlike...

First ever brew I Sunday way

If it's a lager like ale try to keep it as cool as you can during fermentattion, aim for 18 deg and don't worry if it goes a little lower (temperatures are much lower for genuine lager).

    Kit Kockups

+1 to the spray bottles, I picked a pump-up pressurised one from a pound shop a few months back thinking it might come in useful for something sometime and it's turned out to be one of the best purchases I ever made, I only mix about half a pint of sanitiser and everything gets a thorough...

Very first AG brew happening tomorrow - totally stoked for this

Maybe see if they've got protafloc or Irish moss when you pick up the yeast, they're not essential but they're very easy to use and a pack of Irish moss is enough for countless brews (I've never used protafloc). Anything else you might need while you're there, siphon hoses, hop bags, etc? Imo...

Very first AG brew happening tomorrow - totally stoked for this

I think it will benefit from being a little warmer, maybe stand it in some warmish water to gently get it a little higher. 24 deg C would be fine, iirc it's better even higher than that but 24 is a safe figure.

Very first AG brew happening tomorrow - totally stoked for this

Don't worry about them, they're all "fine tuning" ingredients, not essential. For your yeast starter, what temperature are you keeping it to and are you giving it a swirl around occasionally? I've never made a starter so I can't be much help there but it may help with an answer from more...

    What did you brew today?

In the middle of another 17L of blond ale for SWMBO at the mo, Motueka is really working well with this, probably going to give galaxy or amarillo a try when the next order goes in.

    What should I buy?

Lol, the coils just kind of end up that way. I'd used a roll of 10mm copper from B&Q to make mine, wound it around a paint tin as someone suggested on here and it came out looking the bees knees. Now after countless cleanings and minor squishings from getting moved around it's well on its way to...

What do you do with 40 pints of beer??!

40 pints... but not quite all of it comes out of the fermenter and you need to be sure it's done fermenting so the sample jar might drink a pint all by its self so that's about 37 pints... and maybe it's done carbonating after 4 days... nope, how about 5? Nope. 6?... Ok, 2 weeks and it's...

    What should I buy?

Tbh, I'd get in touch with the seller for the first and see if he'll remove the listing and take cash in hand instead. I'd been looking at a very similar setup for about 50% higher price and the only thing that's put me off is distance, I'd have to trust the seller and get it couriered. Some of...

    What should I buy?

Neither are a ripoff imo, the first is asking about what you'd expect to pay for the boiler alone and you're getting a load of useful stuff thrown in and the second is asking about what you'd expect to pay for an inkbird and heater and you're getting a load of not so useful stuff thrown in. The...

    Oats in the mash

I've used porridge in most of my recently brews and imo it adds creaminess to early flavour and to both the taste and texture of the head and that it gives a late dryness to the taste. I've been using about 3% to 5% for light and dark ales, more and the dryness gets too much imo but would...

Airlock drawing back at the end of fermentation

Yes, the cheapo 30L buckets and the lid does bulge up during fermentation. That could make sense, I'd wondered if it was something that happened during diacetyl rest or CO2 absorption, something along those lines but if it doesn't happen with more solid types of vessel then it must be something...

When does temperature control matter most?

I do something along those lines, my brew fridge is a knackered upright fridge freezer pretty much the same size as 2 stacked under counter fridges, the fridge part is kaput but the freezer works fine. The first part of fermentation is done in the freezer to keep temps down and when it's slowed...

Pandemic deliveries just not cutting it.

They where pretty quick with my last order from the home brew company (Ireland), iirc it arrived on a Saturday and only took 2 days. The previous order took over a week but that was at the worst possible time and they where very quick to respond to emails (about 20 minutes). One gripe, they...

Airlock drawing back at the end of fermentation

Anyone know why this is? I pretty much always get it at the end of my brews and was wondering what causes it. Judging by the airlock there always negative pressure in the fermentation vessel (water always higher on the vessel side than the open to air side), I've never caught it bubbling...

    Prosecco etc

Yeah, the Champagne method is pretty much a historic method that's only really still around as an aspect of Champagnes exclusivity, very French. I could've sworn Prosecco was the same, not just the region but the method used but there are indeed bottle carbonated Proseccos and even still...
