Lazy brewing. Adding hops to kits.

Thanks Terry, I've ordered that book, I couldn't resist trying one of my beers last night... It's much better than I thought it would be! Extract brewing might be the way to go next, it was not very time consuming and fun experiment.

    Blackcurrant Wine from frozen fruit

No tannin either! I've only made it once so not sure if it would be better with tannin. I wouldn't think so though.

    Blackcurrant Wine from frozen fruit

I didnt add any, it turned out quite nice and dont think it missed it. But I didnt bother checking the acidity either to see if it needed to be adjusted. Just checking my recipe, made 29 bottles in the end from 6kg of fruit and some red grape juice concentrate, used Lalvin 71B yeast, added...

    Blackcurrant Wine from frozen fruit

Crack on with boiling water to thaw them out 👍 I always use fruit from the freezer because of picking when its ripe and keep putting the picked fruit in the freezer until have enough to make wine.

Stout Kit Tweak - avoiding nibs

Yes, same for me, lots of reading on here, just started posting! I've tweaked the Wilko stout kit by different ways, made it a few times now: Using dark DME, Making a mix of boiling water, cocoa powder and hot chocolate powder and adding at the start - about 25g of each, Steeping 250g of...

In search of a descent Pilsner!

Someone with more experience might advise better but I've done two pilsner kits like this brewing as best as I can in the winter when its colder (must get a fermentation fridge!) and added 25g Saaz as dry hop. Could definitely taste it although more subtle effect as you'd want in a pilsner...

Lazy brewing. Adding hops to kits.

It's a bit murky! I didn't do anything to clear it though.

Lazy brewing. Adding hops to kits.

I didn't have, and couldn't seem to find, any hop extract for bittering and I really wanted to include it. Got the same thing when bottling mine; bit bland. ☹ Probably some medium DME would have helped mine too. Just hope its drinkable light summer beer anyway, will taste one in another week...

    Pineapple wine help

I did some reading about this for a blackcurrant wine and saw figures of 125-250g of sugar per 5 gallons, after stabilising with potassium sorbate at 0.2g per litre for a 10% wine. Best to test separate samples but I just chucked in the lower amount and it came out well to take a little of the...

Lazy brewing. Adding hops to kits.

SG was about 1.049, not accurate because measured in the bucket, it came down to ~1.010 by 27th when I added the hops. So looking like 5%. It had a weird looking 'krausen' on it I've never seen before after the finished gravity is met, been reading up on that, seems to be from the US-05.

Lazy brewing. Adding hops to kits.

This is what I'm doing now, just to see how it comes out, as an experiment: 2kg light DME 1kg sugar To 21 litres water Took some Amarillo and simmered with 2 litres of the water and think it was 250g of malt powder for 20 min. US-05 yeast. After fermentation died down have dry hopped with 75g...

    Cider question, using Gervin GV13

Hello, I’m making my first cider from pressed apples and hope someone with more experience can help. The juice was pressed onto two crushed campden tablets Friday evening, then Saturday afternoon more juice was made, roughly double the amount to just under 4 gallons. Gervin GV13 yeast...
