HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

That's what made me panic in the first place. But this time around I've cooled the water to room temp and it's still that colour :confused.: Gonna roll with it for 3 days and see what occurs

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

The one on the left is what I've used and the one on the right is another one I got later. Unless I'm having a really thick moment I thought DME & Spray Malt were the same thing...? But anyway, I still think it's bloody dark mixed up. Unless I got a duff / mislabled bag??

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

Well the plot thickens for anyone still watching this thread... Had another go at a starter today, boiled my water and let it get to room / pitching temp (21 / 22 ish °C) then added the extra light DME and it's gone pretty much the same colour as before So I've put the yeast in and followed...

    Bleaching mouldy bottles

Cheers for the reply. Think I'm gonna give a 2 prong approach and do the bleaching first then give them a 'gentle' bake in the oven. Purely as they've been sat in a damp shed for so long I'm not taking any chances, especially as these are payment for friends who helped me move. If I bugger it up...

    Lagering vessel

After a bit of a one trying to make my first yeast starter (don't ask, pilot error, well detailed in another thread) I've taken the plunge and tried making my barrel fit my fridge. Butchered the door, all seems to fit OK, just need to make a seperate lower shelf / stand for the barrel...

    Lager and lagering

Cheers for that. Once I've finished butchering my brew fridge I'm gonna give that a good read. The thing I'm slowly learning from homebrew is thst there is always more than one way to skin a cat (and no cats were harmed during the making of any homebrew or forum posts!)

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

I've done that for years, you should see my 'ooh I might need that' crate in my shed!! It'd be bigger but I get in trouble with the Mrs!! :laugh8:

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

Thanks terrym. I think my panic came from just how dark it went, especially as its extra light, it looked burnt hence the title of the thread. My only experience with DME has been with can kits in a big bucket fv and it's all together and steaming up Ive never really paid much mind to its...

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

Spot on. And now I've slung it and resolved to trying again tomorrow. Bah, all I've done today is jump the gun!! :laugh8: think I need to get to my bed and start again fresh tomorrow!!

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

I was going to pitch the whole lot in. Is that not normally the done thing? I guess not and that makes sense as I guess it's like racking your beer into a secondary to get it off the yeast / trub but the other way around, you don't want the watery bit but the yeast that's left behind.

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

I'm inclined to agree. At any rate its not fit for a lager starter. If it'd been an ale or a stout I might have run with it for a laugh but I've not had many biscuity / caramely Mexican beers. Saying that I bumbled across an Aunt Bessie's jam roly-poly beer while watching YouTube on my lunch...

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

Just gave it a quick skim read and makes sense to me, with the brioche bun as example. And my water was screaming hot too.

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

The more I mull it over the more I thing that's whats gone on, never made candi syrup but have cooked with sugar / caramel. It was 2litres of boiling spring water onto 220g of DME. Think I jumped the gun with the water temp which is my bad. But it could have been worse, I've learned something...

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

It was this colour I think my **** up was not letting the boiled water cool before slinging it on top of the DME. I turned the hob off and it'd stopped bubbling and I threw it in. Hindsight maybe not the smartest move. Managed to get some more DME ordered so will either try and see what this...

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

I was skinted out from moving house just before lock down and it didn't even enter my brain that homebrew stuff would be in high demand (duh on my part!). Typical as I now actually have a workshop to brew in and it's tough getting anything. Oh well, got an IPA on the go but that's promised to...

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

Cheers for that, just had a bit of a twinge. Likewise I just normally sling it in with everything and boiling water. Once I mixed it with cool water in a food processor to avoid lumps which worked quite well but it never went this dark. I slung 500g of hopped light in an ipa I've got going under...

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

You're a superstar. Promise I won't be 'that guy' and nag the crap out of you, and feel free to tell me to bugger off at any time. I'll experiment and see how it goes and let you know acheers.

HELP: Can you scald or burn DME??

Hmmm. I might let it get to temp and see how it behaves with the yeast, and get some more DME and yeast and see how it is after 3 days. It smells OK and the glass of the demijohn is a funny colour. Would you mind if I PM you after I see how it goes? It's OK if not, I'll post back here
