The Chaos that is a Buffers Brewery brew day

My eldest son was visiting from New York and asked if we could have a brew day while he was over. Of course I said “yes”. His flight was cancelled so he flew the following day, arriving here on brew day. He and his brother got to me after everything was set up and strike water was up to...

    Finings in a closed fermenter

Thanks @foxy . I thought that might be the case but everything I read on line talked about how to prepare the gelatine solution and how to cool the beer before adding it but nothing explicit about adding the gelatine while still hot to the cold beer. acheers.

    Finings in a closed fermenter

Just one more question about using gelatine. Do you have to add the gelatine solution to the beer while it (the gelatine solution) is still warm or can it be left to cool? The beer will already be cold.

Torrified wheat to aid head retention

I’m a carapils person. 10% of grain bill. If torrified wheat is too terrified to retain your head and oats get stuck, give it a go.

    Refractometer

I used my refractometer regularly when I was experimenting with my mashing process but now I've established my process I just measure OG and FG with my hydrometer.

    Finings in a closed fermenter

Further thought on this method. Just put the gelatine solution into a 500ml beer bottle and use counter pressure filler to top up with beer. Then, still using the CPF reduce barrel pressure (I’ll fit a spundy to the gas post) and increase bottle pressure to drive the beer/gelatine mixture back...

    Finings in a closed fermenter

Next question, what gelatine to use? Sainsbury's Dr Oetker?

    Finings in a closed fermenter

Good to know. I'll see if my process works first asad. before refining the fining :coat:

    Finings in a closed fermenter

I started along the lines of adding the finings at atmospheric pressure at the end of fermentation before transferring to a barrel. But, as I use sugar solution to carbonate I thought that could potentially produce haze so finings needed to be added after carbonation and the beer would be under...

    Finings in a closed fermenter

My pressure barrels don't have taps. I've converted them to corny posts with a floating dip tube from the beer out post.

    Finings in a closed fermenter

Unnecessary I know but I wanted to add the finings without opening the keg, or in my case, barrel.

    Finings in a closed fermenter

I have a floating dip tube in my barrels so that might work? :confused.:

    Finings in a closed fermenter

You've given me an idea :?:ashock1. I could add the finings to the pressure barrel through the beer out post after carbonation and at the start of conditioning? How about this for a (complicated) method... Prepare finings solution and pour into an empty sanitised coke bottle. Fill a beer bottle...

    Finings in a closed fermenter

I have had nice clear ales but occasionally get a little cloudy. Still tastes good but wanted to explore this technique to "polish" my beers :confused.:

    Finings in a closed fermenter

Fermentation bucket is in my fridge so difficult to access to “swirl”.

    Finings in a closed fermenter

Managing to confuse myself here. After further reading, I’m wondering if it would be better to add finings to my pressure barrel when I transfer and prime with sugar solution. Will the finings interfere with carbonation?

    Finings in a closed fermenter

Just looking into finings and read that after preparing and adding the finings solution to the beer a "gentle stir" is required to disperse it. Does anybody have a way of doing this without lifting the lid of the fermenter?

The Chaos that is a Buffers Brewery brew day

The APA I brewed earlier this month has finished fermentation. FG 1.012 so time to cold crash ready to transfer to a barrel in a couple of days time. As I'm busy tomorrow, wifies birthday, I decided to prepare the barrel today. After cleaning and sanitising time to prime with CO2. Fortunately...

    Anna's Brewdays

Good fix doc. Now do it properly and have a standardized connection system for all your balloons and all your fermenters etc. You know it makes sense and you have soooo much time to spare. 😂
