    What are you drinking tonight.

An imperial stout brewed by our friends and local microbrewery Pub Dog Brewing Co. in our small town. Aged with cacao nibs, cherries, and orange, in a bourbon whiskey barrel. It doesn't suck. They do these collaboration brews, where a local liquor store buys the bottling from a single cask of...

    Scotland trip itinerary assist, please

The feedback is outstanding and greatly appreciated, I’ll be having the Mrs. read through this thread as well. In my searches I have run across a B&B in Edinburgh on Frederick St. which is within a block walk each to The Queens Arms pub and the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s Queen Street place...

Do you find it worth using lager yeast

Saflager 34/70 dry lager yeast is the Weihenstaphan strain, and it has been drop-dead reliable. I usually pitch it dry at 50-52˚F, and 1.5 - 2 packets per 5 gallons, depending on the wort's gravity. A couple weeks primary, then a diacetyl rest at 60-65˚F for a couple days, then rack and get it...

    Blichmann therminator connections

Yes they have Garden Hose Thread fittings as well, to work on the cold side.

    Blichmann therminator connections

I use these polysulfone quick disconnects for my Terminator. While they're not stainless, they are high temperature tolerant for the hot side, snap together easily, and disconnect with the push of a button. There are also versions with internal valves which automatically shut off when they are...

    The Tolerant Spouse (including mine)

I wish I knew but I really have no idea . Our local beer stores send out emails every Friday with new things they have received, and of course, off I go like Pavlov's dog to get them. Like these from Traquair House, and the Guinness brewery that opened a couple of years ago here in...

    The Tolerant Spouse (including mine)

My wife is away visiting her family, leaving the dog and me to fend for ourselves. Friends have been over to break the monotony, and to have some beers. As we were browsing through the beer fridges, I heard again from them about how lucky I am to have the spouse that I have. And it is true...

    Scotland trip itinerary assist, please

We will have 11 days on the ground. At this point, the abbreviated version is looking like: 1. Edinburgh and environs (3 nights) 2. Kelso and Borders (4 nights) 3. Glasgow (1 night) 4. Islay (3 nights) 5. Edinburgh (1 more night before we fly out) Original plan was to get a car at the airport...

    Scotland trip itinerary assist, please

Thanks! Three full days in Edinburgh should allow for plenty of pub visits. I’ll definitely come back to you for advice on beer and whisky spots. Wife is also keenly interested in seeing the underground vaults. Sights are also set on Edinburgh Castle, but that urge might be as well satisfied...

    Scotland trip itinerary assist, please

That sounds like heaven, and I’m already starting to fear that I might not want to return home after two weeks, with all the places we will want to see but won’t have enough time. Same reason we bagged my proposed side trip to Shetland. SWMBO thought two nights on the ferry, primarily to...

I’m probably easily amused but that’s one of the funniest screen names on a forum that I’ve seen.

    Scotland trip itinerary assist, please

Thanks, those are my current thoughts as well. A friend and his brother stayed at a B&B in Port Wemyss a year ago and he absolutely still raves about it. Our current inclination is to be in a hotel (with a nice bar) that is more centrally located. But a B&B that is very close to a pub would...

    Scotland trip itinerary assist, please

Thanks! I have read that about Scotland’s low blood alcohol threshold, and the expression “forewarned is forearmed” comes to mind. So yeah, definitely no plans here to press my luck on that.

    Scotland trip itinerary assist, please

Thanks everyone. We built the itinerary using Google Maps for travel time estimates. But we anticipate that reality on the ground, and learning new driving skills, will probably slow us down at least at first. The car thing will be an adventure, I have links to some videos to help me...

    Party star tap questions

Perhaps current users of that system fare better than I did with mine years ago. It just seemed more like a barely functional system with issues, than a robust system you’d want to keep around for years of repeated use. The CO2 cartridges were vulnerable to leaking. Moreover it seemed to me...

    Scotland trip itinerary assist, please

Wife and I will be visiting Scotland in Spring 2020 (late April to early May our first trip outside the U.S. since our Cancun honeymoon 35 years ago). I’m building our itinerary and would greatly appreciate any kind feedback and reality checks on what we have thus far. Dates of flights are...

    Kegging Equipment needs

Greetings. For a single keg, as you already know you need the keg, CO2 tank and regulator. Your keg should come with its lid and posts intact, complete with new O-rings. To get the gas into the keg, you need a hose from the regulator to a "quick disconnect" fitting on the "in" port on the...

Puzzled about bottling from keg and oxygenation

I have bottled many a kegged beer with a beer gun, and they have generally had very good shelf life. The point is to minimize the beer's exposure to oxygen. Purging the bottle first from the bottom with CO2 theoretically keeps the first bit of agitated beer as it starts filling the bottle...

    Minimalist BIAB equipment list?

I’ve never known anyone who wished for a smaller, rather than a larger, brew kettle once they were into the hobby for awhile. Depending on the brew, it is easier to get a rolling, full-volume boil, and prevent boil-overs, with a kettle that is approx twice the size of the final batch volume.
