    What Malt Mill?

It came back into stock and so I picked up one from MM. It's arrived without any instructions - how did you know how to build yours?

Tips for a large wheat-based grain bill?

I'm cobbling together a Weizenbock for the first time, with just over 50% wheat. I've had some trouble getting my target efficiency with wheat, and it was suggested that this might be the fault of the crush, so I asked MM to fine crush it (and bought myself a malt mill for the future) In...

    Grainfather Glycol Chiller Fuse

I've swapped it back to a 3A, but written to the company that sold it to me. As it's less than a year old, I'm worried about a plug fuse going, as in my head that suggests that the equipment has gone faulty and pulled too much current

    Grainfather Glycol Chiller Fuse

Somehow my cables have gotten all muddled up - cold night here and the heater on my fermenter has come on. Turns out I only had a 3A fuse in the plug I'd fished out for it. Have plugged in a spare 13A fuse and it's alive again. But now uncertain that's the right fuse rating and worried about...

    What Malt Mill?

I'd have bought the one from MM but it's been out of stock for many moons. Might drop GEB a line...

    What Malt Mill?

I've been thinking I need a malt mill to try and get better efficiency in my wheat beers. But I'm a bit flummoxed about what is good or not. For example, there's this one: https://www.geterbrewed.com/3-roller-mill/ But I don't know who makes it, and if it will last a while. I fancied one...

    Fritz's Brewdays

Decided to do a short cold crash and kegged for a week. Result is.... Pretty good! Compared to blue moon, probably a little less orange flavour, but still noticeable and a very smooth drinkable beer. Very pleased Coming soon, a pumpkin ale....

    Fritz's Brewdays

Seems to have levelled off at 1.007 now - tastes very much like blue moon. Would folks here cold crash or not? There are still some particles in suspension, but I want to retain the overall haziness for this beer

    Fritz's Brewdays

Oh no - more equipment to buy! :D I've seen similar elsewhere. Meantime, the brew is still bubbling away now at 18C and has dropped from OG 1.047 to 1.011. Still some activity so will probably leave until next week. If it makes it to 1.009, I'll at least have a 5% drink

    Fritz's Brewdays

I have just filled my FV with the Blue Lunacy, though I lowered the orange to 45g and bumped the wheat up to 2.03kg (my 4 year old son helped and it went a bit awry!). Result looks a reasonable colour, and smells very orange though expect that to fade! Quite a lot of the spices seem to have...

    Unscrewing a Tilt Hydrometer

I tried this though maybe I didn't leave it in for long enough...

    Unscrewing a Tilt Hydrometer

I was trying for 15mins - I'll give it another go. How did you grip it?

    Unscrewing a Tilt Hydrometer

so I have a small problem, which is that my Tilt hydrometer rolled onto the floor and it looks like something (one of the weights) dislodged So I wanted to crack it open and see if i could repair it. But despite wearing gloves and employing the strength of 30 men or more, I cannot get the...

First-Time try at Witbier didn’t go to plan.

I think that's the best starting point - I'm sure the beer will be fine, but a shortfall of several litres of wort isn't going to be a mashing problem, I don't think. Either the amount of water was wrong at some stage or the boil was longer/more vigorous than you planned. But if you were...

First-Time try at Witbier didn’t go to plan.

Ah right, so you added 9 L of water during the boil? If so, I don't know how you lost the rest, except that 0.75L/kg looks very low for an absorption rate (1-1.1 seems more realistic) Your calculator output attachment suggests you were only going to get 22.8L (not 27) - see the estimated...

First-Time try at Witbier didn’t go to plan.

Yes, I can follow the calcs but based on this post you started with 30L, not 39L, which would more of less account for the discrepancy you've observed. Your sheets says 12L sparge, but in your post you only did 3L.

Yeah so not sure why it told you 27L mash and 3L sparge.

First-Time try at Witbier didn’t go to plan.

It looks like the mash went fine to me - you got to your target OG. The wort was clear (which is fine for this style - I thought most of the cloudiness came from the low flocculating yeast?) - I've certainly had clear wort on my hefeweizens which use more wheat than you do. I've not seen...

First-Time try at Witbier didn’t go to plan.

Even using your numbers, you started with 30L of water: - Lose 4.35L to absorption (0.75 * 5.8kg) - leaves 25.65L - Lose 6 L in the boil - leaves 19.65L So depends how much water you topped up with, but you didn't have enough liquid to make it to 27L unless you added 7 or 8L. Perhaps your...
