    What happened to my volume?

I used brewfather to scale down - I think it automatically adjusts for boil off and system loss and I used the same figures for both as I've used before? I'm not sure it adjusts for hop absorption though so that could well be a contributing factor. Being 4l short seems a lot to lose to hops...

    What happened to my volume?

I've been pondering this for a couple of weeks now and I can't come up with an explanation. My last brew day was a NEIPA. Recipe came from David Heath's video on NEIPAs - I put it into Brewfather and scaled it to make a 21l batch with the intention of getting 19l in the keg. Malt bill was 76%...

    Mesh strainer basket

Just to bring my part of this to a close... Annual review at work went better than expected resulting in a bonus that'll allow me to get a new system and put a decent amount into the mortgage deposit. Robobrew has been ordered. I'm going to keep the Klarstein for the time being and use it for...

    Mesh strainer basket

I wouldn't go with HopCat after what I've read about them on here either. Poor communication is something I can't tolerate. I think it's a toss up between the Brewzilla and Brew Monk at the moment. I think the Brew Monk is the same unit as the Klarstein but under a different name which puts...

    Mesh strainer basket

I've pretty much decided that the Klarstein needs replacing. I should have got the more expensive model to start out with but, having not used an all in one system before, I wasn't sure what I was looking for and thought that the cheaper model would suffice. There are quite a few models around...

    Mesh strainer basket

Thanks @AdeDunn Don't think there's any way to mod mine to do similar but at least I know not to discount the higher end Klarstein models if I upgrade.

    @AdeDunn cheers, I'd appreciate that.

    Refractometers and temperature compensation

I've got an iSpindel waiting to be put together so we'll have a similar setup once I get it up and running. Good to hear that it all works okay.

    Refractometers and temperature compensation

I much prefer using a refractometer and, as the reading is being recorded anyway, putting the Brix reading into a calculator first isn't a huge issue. My only concern at the moment is that I got refractometer after breaking my hydrometer so I've not yet been able to compare the calculated value...

    Mesh strainer basket

Totally get that. It's more than I was expecting and I'm struggling to justify the expense myself. My problem is that the Klarstein is taller and slimmer than most systems so replacement baskets aren't easy to find. If Ali Express or similar did one at the right size and a fraction of the...

    Mesh strainer basket

Company I was contacting has replied. £140 for a 280mmx400mm basket with £12 shipping. They require a decent diagram to work from. Not as cheap as AliExpress etc but it's a UK company making a bespoke product. Inoxia Ltd

    Mesh strainer basket

Just a quick update to this... The company I contacted haven't replied. I'm going to chase them tomorrow as I know things can be missed/forgotten about but I don't hold much hope. No notice of covid related closure on the site so I suspect they just aren't interested in doing a small, one off...

    Homebrew set up

I'd love a dedicated room for brewing but I haven't got the space. All brewing is done in the kitchen with fermentation fridge and temp controlled freezer (new bigger freezer for full keezer setup to be added soon) are at the back of the kitchen. All equipment is stored in the back...

    Corny keg questions

Cheers, really helpful info. I do like to be able to put hard figures to things where possible. Everyone here seems to state bottle size in kg but the supplier I got mine from works in litres. I ended up with a 10l bottle which I think is the same as 6.35kg based on pictures people have...

    Mesh strainer basket

A few things. First is the size - the basket has an inch of dead space all around it. Today's brew was just under 5kg of grain in 22l of mash water and it was like stirring porridge. I can add more water but it's nearly at the limit of what the kettle can handle already. Second issue is...

    Mesh strainer basket

Might have found a UK manufacturer who could make one. No idea on costs but I'm going to email them tomorrow for a quote. I'll let you know how I get on.

    Mesh strainer basket

I tried getting a quote off suppliers on Alibaba. Only got a response off one supplier - $80 for the basket and $90 for the shipping. Mine was for a narrower, taller basket but I'd imagine the shipping will be fairly standard. I decided that was a little steep for something that may never...

    Corny keg questions

Thanks. Hadn't thought of checking coal men. Sounds as though a single bottle would be enough to see me for a good while.

    Corny keg questions

Hi, Apologies if these questions have been answered elsewhere. I have looked but couldn't find anything. I'm thinking of getting a couple but have a few practical concerns. Where do you get your gas from and what do you get? I had assumed it was just co2 but a lot of suppliers offer a mix...

First Klarstein brew - a few questions

Thanks, I'll have a read through that thread when I'm on my laptop. Just checked and I had just under 6kg of grain so 23l of water should have been plenty (unless I weighed it wrong - unlikely but not impossible). Next planned brew has a lighter grain bill. I'll do plenty of reading before...
