    Bramling Cross/Goldings ESB type thing

I brewed this on Saturday, and the smell coming from the FV is definitely blackcurrant! I'm glad I cut the BX additions to 10g each, otherwise I'm sure it would be overpowering. Kraussen is high and very fluffy, and I'm trying to keep the temperature down to 19°c, which has been pretty...

How to build a stir plate for less than ten quid

Where do we all keep our stir bars when we're not using them? My memories of A level physics are hazy so I can't remember if I should keep it attached to the magnets, or away from magnetic influence.

How to build a stir plate for less than ten quid

I used the one linked on the first page, so it's 92mm. Fits perfectly in the box I used. When I tried it out the stir bar kept flying out of reach of the magnets, but I put another couple of magents on top so it should be fine. The fan is fixed at the top of the machine screws.

    Bramling Cross/Goldings ESB type thing

Great, thanks for your help. I'll definitely tone down that latter one to 10g then. Probably the earlier one too. I can always up it in a future brew.

How to build a stir plate for less than ten quid

Finally put mine all together in a box, and here it is! I've got the controller blutacked to the bottom because I didn't have any shorter machine screws to fix it down. Maybe something for another day. I'm going to stick some rubber tape on the top so my flask is more stable when it's switched...

    Bramling Cross/Goldings ESB type thing

I wish I could get myself one of the Brewdog Bramling Cross single hop beers, but they're long gone. My logic is that I'm pairing each addition with goldings so it *shouldn't* overpower things quite so much. But my thinking may be way off!

    Bramling Cross/Goldings ESB type thing

Some more digging made me agree I might have gone too heavy on the hops. I'll probably reduce the later hop additions (everything but the initial bittering) by a third. Thanks!

    Bramling Cross/Goldings ESB type thing

As much as I like the stupidly hopped American IPAs, or the very strong Belgian dubbels or what have you, I do enjoy a nice bitter every now and then. I'd quite like to try something, vaguely along the lines of a fullers ESB, and I'd also quite like to try using Bramling Cross hops. I know some...

    Four weeks and still bubbling.

Obviously not the case here, but cold beer holds more carbon dioxide in solution than warm beer (when not under pressure), so moving a fermented FV of beer from a cold garage to a warm kitchen will mean bubbling as the beer warms up and the CO2 comes out of solution.

    Banoffee Weizenbock

I'd probably just go for it as it is. If you added the chocolate wheat on top you might throw the whole thing out of balance. It won't be the same, but you've got enough other malt going on that I can't see it causing any huge problems. Though I've not used either of those grains myself so I...

    Oaty IPA

Cheers. I'll probably still give it a go anyway, and if there's obviously not much yeast when it settles then I'll chuck it, otherwise I'll keep it for another generation.

    Oaty IPA

Just pitched on this experiment. My first time repitching yeast from slurry, also trying out golden naked oats. I'd been told they can make things taste of peanuts. Well the raw grains certainly did! Here's the recipe anyway, 12 litre batch. 2.5kg pale malt 0.3kg golden naked oats Mashed...

    RecipeIdeas, Please

I have a medium term plan to make a big tripel, but I'll probably make a patersbier first, then brew the tripel on the yeast cake straight afterwards. Maybe something to think about before your dubbel?

    how many times

The grain isn't used in place of flour, just as an extra addition. I think it's usually toasted, so it can add some extra crunch. Probably little else, but there are plenty of things you can add to bread that are just for texture. I keep meaning to try it.

    IPA with golden naked oats

It's a present for the couple rather than a crowdpleaser. If anything I was considering whacking some sugar in to up the ABV! I think he would appreciate that but she might be less keen. Thanks for the advice. I'd love to cater for a wedding with homebrew. Perhaps something for my own if that...

    IPA with golden naked oats

I've been tasked with making a beer for the wedding of some friends this summer, and I've got time for a trial batch before making the real thing. He likes his hops, and I've got 50g of centennial in the freezer. I'll probably keep that for the final beer to add some extra complexity, and I was...

How to build a stir plate for less than ten quid

Pretty sure there wasn't anything sticking out. I found another 12V transformer in the flat and I tried that and it works so I must have got a dud. It's working now though, which is the important thing. Just need to find a case for it...

How to build a stir plate for less than ten quid

Got everything delivered! Put it all together, plugged it in and bang... (well, the sound of the fuse going in the transformer). I double checked I'd got all polarities right (both before plugging it in, and again afterwards). Maybe I've got a dud something along the way? If I can dismantle the...

    Scottish ale

Well I suppose I've just brewed a Scottish Saison! (I'm being slightly obtuse. I'm grateful for the historical perspective).
