    Missed FG by a mile

OG estimates were from the recipe. I then put in into Beersmith and increased the malt bill slightly to achieve target. As my first brew was done in the same way I assumed this would be in the ballpark at least. In this case pre-boil OG was 1.060, I know I should have probably added some sugar...

    Missed FG by a mile

Hi All, Am new to AG and this was my second brew, first one was a stout, aimed at 1.071, hit 1.066 but put this down to having to add water to the FV as I came up short. This time I was heading for 1.076, ended up with 1.056. It should still be a good beer, from a visual perspective it's my...

5 litre Batches of Beer. Why?

I like this idea, I have a couple of FV's and my pan's big enough for a 10L boil so I could split the wort and do different stuff with it. Thinking cap on ..........

Water water everywhere but how much do I need!!

I do small batch too - been a bit of trial and error for me, last brew was short and I liquored back so I've increased my strike volume for the next batch to compensate.

5 litre Batches of Beer. Why?

I brew 5L AG. In general I like that I can have a few different types of beer in the fridge at once so I've generally got something I fancy in there. If I look in there now I've got sours, porters, NEIPA's, low-alcohol, belgian, red, saisons, and a ton of IPAs (not all my own brews I must add)...

    Alcohol free beer

I’d like to brew one just to see if I could and then give it to someone without them knowing - success would be them not thinking it was any different to an alcoholic beer. Would much rather brew it properly rather than take the alcohol out of a perfectly good beer.

    ******** !

Mine did that this week too! First AG brew, high OG, way more active that the last kit brew.

Where to go after starter kits

My first brew was a kit. My second is AG, al I added was a better grain bag (BIAB) and time as you need to steep the grains. No idea how either brew is turning out yet, first is carbing and second is in the FV - although it is looking great! So to answer your question you can go AG whenever...

First time brewer with questions about bottling

Not used gelatin but from what I’ve heard it can also remove your yeast so you may need to add it back in to your priming solution. You can also use Irish moss / protafloc in the boil.

Brewday No.2 - Putting on the big boy pants

Thanks. Last brew was a kit and it was nowhere near as lively. Forgot to take OG readings with that one but I expect it was much lower. Headspace adjustment is definitely another thing I’ve learnt from this brew. A bigger stock pot is already on order, could certainly do a bigger brew in it...

Brewday No.2 - Putting on the big boy pants

Quick look at it this morning and the yeast are having a field day - foam’s getting close to the air-lock. Will have another look later as it might need an extra bit of hose. Is there a proper name for that foam/bubbles?

Brewday No.2 - Putting on the big boy pants

Haha, I’m going for the ‘little & often’ approach with a dash of experimentation for good measure. I’m getting another FV with a wider neck to make FV additions & dry-hopping easier. Bonus to that is the ability to do a weekly (ish) brew and stagger the two. Needless to say I’m brewing to a...

    First non-kit BIAB

Have fun - had similar issues yesterday and it was gone midnight before I’d finished

    First non-kit BIAB

How did it go? Did my first AG yesterday too, definitely learned a lot, although hopefully not at the expense of the beer.

Brewday No.2 - Putting on the big boy pants

Hi all, So my first ever brewday went fine, bottled it on Saturday and all seems and tasted ok - but it was a kit. So yesterday I put my big boy pants on and did my first AG brew. I learnt a lot!! I’m very much small batch and aim for about 4L in my FV so you might have to adjust to my...

Thanks, might just take you up on that!

    Hi from Berkshire

Hi all! I’m Tom, we’re in Newbury but I’m a Cornishman born and bred. Used to make wine from all sorts of stuff 20-odd years ago and had been harping on about making beer lately which led to being given a small-batch kit for Christmas from the wife. I think she’s regretting it already! So I’m...
