    Beer mixtures

There used to be a jovial fellow running the Halfway House near Tavistock, who would offer a ‘Pint Across the Pumps’. This consisted of a mixture of whatever he had on draught at any particular time!

    Too cold.

I thought I would elaborate on my past dealings with St Austell Brewery, both of which were concerning their labels. The first were on bottles of Proper Job. Along with a load of tripe about the origin of the typical Cornish expression was this picture of a trooper holding the Union Flag...

    Too cold.

They usually have Tribute on, and the plan was to forward the photo to St Austell Brewery with the hope that they would get their Rep to have a quiet word in the bar manager’s ear regarding the correct temperature at which to serve their beer. I know them a bit from various past issues, but not...

    Too cold.

I don’t think I could get away with running a lead across the room to the nearest socket as the dancers would trip over it. However some chemical warming gadget might work. I have used the candle they put on tables to de-freeze beer, but it takes a hell of a time! I don't like my beer 'warm'...

    Too cold.

Our local Jazz Club has resumed holding Jigs after 20 months of lockdown, and yesterday evening I was taken by my assistant brewer (retired) to see Black Cat Jazz at the British Legion. Past experience has shown that the beers there are served so cold as to be tasteless, so I went prepared with...

    Transfering from pb to pb.

The trouble with that plan is that when you de-pressurise your KK the yeast will be disturbed, leading to slightly hazy beer.

    Guns

May I once again bring to the attention of any other very elderly males on this forum, this ‘Doctor Smallpiece’s Patent Trouser Protector’. This is a ***** extender with no sexual purpose whatever, merely a devise to eliminate having to change your trousers every time you pee. De-luxe version...

    Asbestos

I was surprised to see this description of ‘polished’ in one of the first books on Home Brewing to be published after the practice became legal, written by the Editor of Home Winemaker, C.J.J. Berry. A quick check on the web turned up this Ingested asbestos in filtered beer, in addition to...

    Who remembers and used.

In the 1930’s there was an un-earthed 15 amp 2-pin socket in our bathroom specifically for such an electric fire. One day a 2-year old cousin of mine was left sitting on his potty close to it, and he found a bent Kirby grip on the floor. When he pushed the ends into the socket, the neutral must...

That's just a pin punch and (c)lump hammer. For holes you used a rawltool and much lighter hammer. Remember rawlplugs?

    Who remembers and used.

Or the popular song 'I couldn't resist her with her pocket transistor'! Going back to those Button A and Button B phone boxes, you put your money in then dialed the number. If anybody answered you then pressed 'A' to be connected. If they didn't you pressed 'B' and got your money back. There...

Good quality malt mill? - How much we need to spend to not get ripped off by poor quality products?

Yes, that’s the one I bought. I used a rechargeable drill to drive it, and it milled 25 plus kilos in just over half an hour, with one battery change. If I was buying again, I would probably go for a geared 3 roller mill, but that’s just conjecture. Only slight annoyance is assembling the...

    Engineer or Ingeniator?

I’m thinking of changing my Forum name to The Ingeniator who Used to Brew. Male contributors over a certain age may be interested in one of my fairly recent creations called ‘Doctor Smallpiece’s Patent Trouser Protector’. The Deluxe version is illustrated below.
