    A Long Time Ago . . .

I stopped using primings after spending a week at Peter Austin’s Ringwood Brewery, and seeing how they did things. Why all home brewers conduct two consecutive fermentations – back to back – has seemed a bit daft ever since. Far be it for me to upset the apple-cart, it is a pretty fool proof way...

    Are jugs a bit 'non-U'?

I found the really large Glass Jug, in the background, in Tavistock Pannier Market several years ago, and always pour bottled beers into it first to reduce the carbonisation level to my preference. (With bottled conditioned beers like St Austell’s ‘Proper Job’ and Wadsworth’s ‘Old Timer’, I...

    A Long Time Ago . . .

In 1990, I made a video of brewing on my recently acquired 36 gallon (164 litre) plant. Twenty years later I made another, highlighting changes made in light of experience, and combined them on a DVD. I have forced a copy on a few members of this forum over the years, who in the main have been...

    Drones

If you watch ‘Happy New Year Live! London Fireworks 2022 BBC’ (from 5m 00s), you would be in no doubt what it was. I took the photo at the end of its roar.

    Drones

Wasn’t that roaring lion’s head that suddenly appeared at the London New Year fireworks fantastic. How they can pre-programme 500 drones to fly with such precision for the duration of the show is a miracle. I wonder if they all returned to their base safely, or whether some were lost in action.

    Dates to Remember

This day next month the date will be 2/2/22. I remember the day it was 12/3/45 would you believe! I was attending a Prep School in Yorkshire at the time, run very much like Wackford Squeers’ Dotheboys Hall – canings were administered by the Headmaster in a ritual held in the Gym every Monday...

    Four Priests Brewery YouTube channel

I'm intrigued to know who the four priests are. You don't look like men of the cloth. 😇

Is this the beginning of the end for the Conservatives.

Although I had to change to centigrade for fermentation, as that was what my temperature controller worked in, I stuck to F for mashing, and had an accurate glass thermometer for that. Most digital thermometers I have come across were liars.

Is this the beginning of the end for the Conservatives.

Imagine what it is like to have been taught and used imperial measurements throughout your Schooling, at University, during National Service, at the time of your wedding and birth of your son, and then to be told everything must change! Couple that with a brain which refuses to tackle mental...

    Favourite Christmas Film?

A perfect Christmas film, which they never put on for some reason, is 'Little Lord Fauntleroy'. It stars Alec Guinness, Eric Porter, Connie Booth who played Polly in Fawlty Towers, and was made in 1980.

    Draught ale from a bottle

I was talking about commercial bottles of beer, not home brewed.

    Draught ale from a bottle

That’s the only way I can drink bottled beer. You need a large glass jug, and as long as the beer isn’t bottle conditioned, tip the contents in from about a foot, and leave it for 3 minutes minimum before transferring it to your glass. For bottled-conditioned beers pour carefully into a glass...

How many litres have you brewed individually

Thanks Clint, that’s cheered me up a lot. And I need cheering up as despite brewing all that beer, I’ve only two gallons of it left! 😭

How many litres have you brewed individually

How many litres have you brewed individually

Grand Total of beer brewed since I went all grain (in 1974, the year Dave Line’s 'Big Book of Brewing' was first published): 8635 gallons = 39,256 litres = 69,080 pints = 38½ tons ! This does not include my prior 17 years apprenticeship using malt extract.
