    this weather...

This morning 5:20 a.m. temperature outside was 16.3°C but garage where my brewing is done was 23°C the demijohn in freezer is at 19.4°C with the air at 19.6°C the demijohn controls the fridge/freezer but the fermentor was only at 21.6°C cooler than I had expected as when the...

    this weather...

My move to refrigeration was by accident. We had insurance on the Hotpoint fridge/freezer and the light started to flash on/off when we opened fridge door, the Hotpoint man took one look at back of fridge and condemned the lot saying the ice forming at back was a sign the thermal insulation had...

    First attempt

I remember doing a coppers ginger beer and it took me ages to work out what a carbonation drop was. It turns out they are a bit like a sugar lump, when it said drop I thought it was a single drop of some magic liquid however that is not the case. It seems they are a set quantity of fermentable...

    First attempt

I would agree when I first tried to bottle my syphon tube was too short. I bought some extra and a tap, and filling from the bottom stops all the foam and is so much easier. I use pop bottles again 2 litre bottles then only 12 for 40 pints, so much easier.

    What if....

I had the same with a Classic Liquors Orange Brandy, the yeast did not seem to rehydrate, so just in case I added some Prohibition yeast as well, it seemed dead, then slowly started and now going fine, not a clue which yeast kicked in, but one did. still waiting for it to stop and clear before...

Does airlock activity always stop when FG is reached?

That is fast, my Youngs Scottish Heavy I look at over 20 days 10 in first fermentor, and 10 in second but can stretch to 30 days. But the temperature will alter how long, in theroy the brew should be at either 60°F (15.6°C) or 20°C to use the hydrometer depending on the temperature the...

    water temp

Yes my water also warm, I found last kit started at 20.8°C when I did my best to use as little hot water as I could get away with. You need some hot water to get the concentrate out of the can. I am lucky I have a freezer compartment which the fermentor fits in to so I can cool it to what...

    Whatever happened to patience?

I know the longer left the better, but for me it's stock levels which alter how long in the fermentor and bottle. As rule of thumb 10 days in freezer at 18.5ºC then move to clean fermentor and to fridge, where it sits a further 10 days with temperature no lower than 18.5ºC but no control...

    Beer Enhancer or household sugar?

I am at the moment doing my first brew with beer enhancer. It is a brew I have done many times before, so I should know as soon as I taste it if worth the extra money. The problem is there are so many variables, the main one being temperature, when I first started I noted that the same kit...

High temperature at beginning of fermentation

The wet towel and fan does work, latent heat of evaporation, but too late now, I have in the past had some rather bitter beers as a result of over temperature, but given time to condition they do seem to have mellowed somewhat. For a few years I only brewed in the Winter, this is first year of...

    Settling after moving fermentor

It is not the simple lifting it is the sliding into the fridge and angling it to remove from the freezer. Anyway I left 24 hours. It is an experimental brew for me, first time with brew enhancer so want to give it best start in life I can. Then if not better than the simple sugar I can't put it...

    Settling after moving fermentor

I have started to use my freezer compartment to start off my beers, however it is too low to syphon from so step one is to move from freezer to fridge so I can syphon either to clean fermentor or to bottle. To move I am not strong enough to do it in a gentle way, it gets shaken about a bit, so...

    Sterilisation

I make kits, the fermentor is filled with tap water, how every well I clean and sterilise the fermentor I can't remove the chance that the water has bugs in it. All I can do is cross my fingers, yes I clean out after each brew, but no point going OTT when your using tap water, I always rinse of...

    Hydrometer...does anyone....

In the Young's screw cap fermentor it is hard to see the hydrometer and so very early on I decided I needed to extract beer to test and put in in a tall jar. Even with a large clip on top the foam on the beer stops one easy reading the hydrometer. My early thoughts were to use the same system...

    Fermentation fridge build

OK hands up I got it wrong. The STC-1000 with sensor on the fermentor once the freezer was used kept the fermentor near enough spot on the 18.5ºC set, I used an 8W bulb as heater. The Air temperature went from 5.8ºC to 22ºC the former when first switching on with 2.5ºC to drop on...

Victors Apple Cider 20 Pint temperature

My wife has just arrived home with the kit. Not really a cider man and it states will keep 20 days, not sure I want a pint a night for 20 days on the run. But without opening it may say more inside it states room temperature which could be 16 ~ 26 degrees. In the summer my beer needs around...

    Methods to monitor fermtation progress.

Yes I would agree, the cold spell has upset my tests in a way. In another way it is good, once I have found how the fridge and freezer react with the controls I can sit back and forget about it. But at the moment not sure what will happen. Well yesterday I got around to swapping the...

    Methods to monitor fermtation progress.

Well it has gone completely up the creak, the cold spell has removed the need for cooling, and the temperatures simply don't make sense. I would expect there to be a gradient garage, freezer air, fermentor with the garage coldest and fermentor hottest, but that has not happened the freezer air...

    Hydrometer Accuracy?

There are two temperatures used with hydrometers 16°C (60°F) and 20°C also temperature correction varies with plastic or glass used to make them. There is no universal temperature correction chart only the one which comes with the hydrometer is valid. I have seen where a hydrometer...

Cooling fermentor sensor on fermentor or in air?

Now I am really scratching my head, I measure 4 temperatures Garage where the fridge/freezer is placed in the fridge under the fermentor no heating or cooling control, in the freezer air, and the last one is monitoring the fermentor in the freezer and is set to run freezer should the temperature...
