    Insulation for almost anything.

I bought the Aldi equivalent last year to go around my Grainfather. When it got close to the boil it started to stick to the metal, so I panicked and took it off. Do they melt? And can they be easily removed if so?

    Brew area sink plumbing query

Had a play with my plumbing stuff tonight and you're spot on BigCol. A bit of hot water and a bit of sanding to my 32mm pipe and the corrugated pipe went on a treat. Got a cheap trap for about 3 quid. Starting building my brewing bench as well. Picture a Belfast sink on the right hand side.

Is it safe to drink unclear beer.

Someone wrote to Viz magazine a few years reporting he had been contacted by a large no-win, no-fee legal firm for personal accident claimants. On informing the polite young lady who had phoned that he had recently consumed 8 pints of real ale, sneezed and shat himself, he was very surprised to...

    Brew area sink plumbing query

Thanks for the reply. That sounds like a plan. I've ordered a few bits and bobs and I'll see what goes together. Cheers

    Brew area sink plumbing query

Hi I've managed to acquire an old Belfast sink for my garage to add to my brewing area. I have water and power in the garage but no waste water. I only brew about once a month so I was planning on running a 4m length of 32mm flexible hose from the sink waste out of my garage door to the...

    DIY prosecco

Not sure. But a friend bought me a lovely fizzy sauvignon blanc that I'm going to try and replicate. Apparently the grape varieties for champagne are either chardonnay or pinot noir / meunier.

    DIY prosecco

Cheers for that. It appears to get 6 times I only need to go for 50 psi at 4 degrees. I've read online coke bottles easily put up with 80 psi if not far higher.

    DIY prosecco

I'm going to try carbonating some wine in a normal PET 1 litre bottle. I've just bought a cheap carbonation cap off eBay that fits on to my CO2 line. I've read above that it needs to be about 60 psi to replicate the fizz in shop bought prosecco. Any one got any idea what pressure a PET...

Beer of the Month (December 2018)

"As much yeast in the glass as possible" reminds me of the time my Uni mates stayed at my house the night before my wedding (without me). I told them to help themselves to as much bottled home brew as they wanted. They'd seen me carefully pour from the bottle and shake the remaining beer and...

    First abject failure... but why?!

I just leave it in.......but I do like my beers quite hoppy. I work on the assumption the hops are trying to flavour 19 litres to start with but then as you drink more there is less volume but the hop pellets have given up some of their potency. So it should be a happy equilibrium.

    First abject failure... but why?!

I've tried several ways of dry hopping in my cornie. 1) just chucked 30g of loose pellets in. Complete disaster- just bunged the out post completely. 2) then tried putting hop pellets in a muslin bag and then dropping that in. A bit better but again the bag eventually attached itself to the...

    Burco Boiler Temperature Control

When I checked mine it was pretty close. I assume you are using it for a sparging. You could always check the temperature of the water when it gets to the grain bed and then adjust it accordingly up or down. I was a bit concerned though about mine as you can turn the dial up and down by 10...

    Bulletproof mash schedule

Keep us updated how the low carbohydrate beer goes. I might have a crack at one myself. I'm currently trying a low carb diet to lose a bit of weight and it is working well. Michael Mosley describes beer as "liquid toast"!!!!

    advice needed

I wholly agree with the above. If in doubt leave at least 2 weeks without touching it. My dad repeatedly takes the lid off and blows across the surface to "check for fermentation bubbles" and wonders why his brews end up infected.

    What are you drinking tonight.

Filthy Phil's IPA. Just to clarify a mate called Phil asked me replicate an IPA from the Derby brewing company. After a quick read of the back of the bottle we put together a recipe heavy with hops and malt and I have to say the result is great. Mosaic and Wai-iti hops. 5.4%
