    Beerworks Southern Gold Digger

So checking this out just now prior to sticking it in a corny Keg, I notice what looks to be an infection, ahhhhhhhhh!. Not sure what caused it as such as was fine when checked as per my last post 5 days before Xmas with only what looked to be hop particles floating. I'm hoping the extended...

    Which Regulator

Fair enough, and that's 1 of the things that would really concern me, a "set & forget" method to find you've lost PSI. But then again I'd be overly cautious that I'd be constantly checking the PSI anyway lol.

    Which Regulator

I'm hopefully getting my first corny keys tomorrow, so been wandering about regulators myself these last 2 days. Thankfully I've a local homebrew shop that might have them. But other than that would buying off Amazon using owner reviews really be an idea as an alternative?. It's just that I...

    Beerworks Southern Gold Digger

So here we are, after more patience that I thought I had fermenting at slightly lower than normal recommended temps (16-18°) and with the FV still slightly bubbling away I've decided to draw a sample to test. Gravity currently reads 1.003 (target was 1.004) so I'm made up with that as it brings...

    Tonight's election programming

In all honesty, I do like these results shows. You normally have a good indication by about 2am on the probable outcome. But funny how the most media attentive polling company which happens to favour the Tories is owned by a major Tory supporter eh?. But these polls do have a large margin of...

    General metal cask\barrel questions?

Thanks for the replies guys, I didn't realise the options available when looking at getting kegs\casks. I think in the first instance I'm going to go down the corny keg route, might get 2 used ones at the same time as opposed to a single new one. Iancon, I kind of get that from working at beer...

    General metal cask\barrel questions?

OK, in thinking more smaller 19 litre corny style kegs might be more practical for now, if only to help keep the beer fresher in smaller batches than a single 40+ litre batch that would likely go off quicker once I start consuming it. Besides, an under counter fridge will becoming available in...

    General metal cask\barrel questions?

Thanks for the replies, yes being able to ensure the things are clean is vital, hence why I bought a wide neck plastic pressure barrel for ease of access. But in fairness, aside from being able to visually check any such keg is clean I do have a pressure washer which unless there is a reason...

    General metal cask\barrel questions?

After my initial testing of the Wilko pressure barrel has been positive and I see no reason to move away from that where it suits the type of ale etc. Saying that, i'm now also starting to look ahead to the metal barrels where I want something more pressure resistant for full carbonation etc...

    Beerworks Southern Gold Digger

Thought it a non obvious choice myself seeing as its supposed to be a lager kit, yet using an ale yeast more for american ales, APA, IPA type, but not lager. Not that I will hold that against the kit at all, maybe the yeast choice is more to do with yeast temp requirements that many would...

    Beerworks Southern Gold Digger

OK, so I'm on day 13 of this brew. In the end I decided to leave in the FV where I'd started it on day 1 as a steady 18° c for that period seemed a good level to work with. Well that and that I already had my stout & bitter in the cooler utility room (10-12°c). But I've finally got about to...

    Beerworks Southern Gold Digger

Not fully sure, it was a "Make Your Own" brand Yorkshire Bitter in the older style branding. That's still fermenting tonight) and was tested to 1.010 a week ago, so god knows what it is now! (don't want to keep opening. But really looking forwards to how a highly extended fermentation period...

    Beerworks Southern Gold Digger

Thanks, sadly no indication what so ever on the yeast on exactly what type, just "premium lager yeast" printed on it. Though interesting is that some reviews feel it tastes more like an ale than a lager!. Though would not have thought the recipe developers and sellers would get it so wrong as...

    Beerworks Southern Gold Digger

I also do AG, but given that I'm busy with work and have very little free time right now & other commitments then a hour doing a kit (including sterilising and prep time) brew over pretty much a full day for a AG brew does have its attraction. Anyway, interesting is the 50g hop pellets to add...

    Beerworks Southern Gold Digger

Well, I did a slight short fill, 22.5 litres as don't really want to go above the stated 5% abv but don't really want below 4.5% either. So hoping a very slight short fill 22.5 litres will allow at least acceptable 4.5% abv with hopefully more towards the stated 5% mark. SG was about 1.041 (at...

    Beerworks Southern Gold Digger

Well time for another new brew for me, this time after a trip to the local brew shop and already deciding I wanted to try a lager kit I settled on the "Beerworks Southern Gold Digger Premium Lager". And will be doing this in the next hour. As with these premium kits the 3kg of malt means no...

    The Range Bitter kit.

Hmm, assumingly boil with water?. If so what are the suggested process such as sugar to water ratio?. I recall in the past with 1 kit (cider) the recommendations was to prime with a liquid sugar solution.

    Plastic pressure barrels?

In my first experience of a new PB from Wilko the first usage requires as tight as tight can get via normal hand tightening. Because my testing indicated that whilst I thought it was tight enough that pressure testing indicated it was not seal tightened. Another 3cm tighter, seems fine and...

    Plastic pressure barrels?

Thanks, noted & will leave (like I did) at least 2 days before checking the pressure with future PB brewing. At least they are only small 8g bulbs so 45p wasn't to bad to find I did have a leak in the lid and saved the brew.

    The Range Bitter kit.

Well as long as its more just not finished fermenting than anything wrong is my main concern. That and if the hop bag is OK to leave in for the time being as its been 10 days now. But at 1.010 it currently stands at 5.25% abv, which is a decent result in itself even if it doesn't drop further...
