    Fermenting vessel heating

I bought a large bucket today and an aquarium heater. All together it's quite neat actually and will all tuck away in the cupboard when not in use. I've got the FV and bucket trialing the temperature at the moment with only water, so will see how that goes before starting another brew.

    Fermenting vessel heating

Tubular heaters are out of stock everywhere. Either we now have a nation of brewers, or people are expecting the big freeze. I've got a handy cupboard I could use for two weeks here and there to do a brew, with a tubular heater in there I can keep the temperature steady. When I get hold of a...

    Fermenting vessel heating

That's given me an idea. I also see we're both Kallax fans ;)

    Fermenting vessel heating

Ok, I'm not using a fridge. Somewhere we've crossed wires. I'm using a fermenting vessel, one of these

    Fermenting vessel heating

This has probably been asked before, no doubt. I did a search but couldn't find what I was looking for. So, to keep my next fermenting brew at a stable and necessary temperature, what's the best reasonable heater, pad, belt that I could look for? Also, where's the place to get such kit from...

Is this ready for the barrel yet?

Garage well below 10, about 5, so a cold crash or whatever it's called is out of the question. Also, how many CO2 bulbs would be typically needed to run a 40 pint barrel?

Also, how much fill do I get from a CO2 bulb? Say, when it needs gassing again and the barrel is around half way or more, to keep it pressurised, how many bulbs are typically used during the service of one brew in a 40 pint barrel?

How much cooler would be ok? I could try the garage, but not sure if that's too cool.

Is this ready for the barrel yet?

Ok, I tried a little, just a very small glass. It smells like Hobgoblin, tastes quite like an IPA at the moment. Certainly has a kick to it, but it needs more time to clear or condition or whatever it is. But so far, looking good.

It's been between 16-18 for the past two weeks. Was warmer for the primary fermentation.

Is this ready for the barrel yet?

This weekend will be two weeks in the barrel, I'm wondering if it'll be ok to draw a pint or two? I know some let it sit for two weeks, some longer. Maybe experimenting is the way to go?

Is this ready for the barrel yet?

Plus, the comment about storing beer in bulk, I just don't have it in me to have 40 pint bottles to put a brew in so a barrel it is. I'm at the moment using kits which brew 40 pints. I'm not going to the effort to make everything myself for 5 or so pints, so it will always be bulk batches.

What's the ideal secondary fermentation temperature? It's been around 18 in it's barrel location, dipping slightly below during the night. This weekend will be one week in the barrel so far.

You never said, what do you use instead of PBs?

Is this ready for the barrel yet?

Hydrometer reading the same as Friday. It's all in the barrel. I had to suck a bit to get the syphoning started, but the hose has a tap on the end, so I shut it off and wiped it with a rag dipped in the milton solution then let the process commence. A little bit went in my mouth when I...

Air tightness, wouldn't leak air. I did it with solution in there which had carbed up. What do you use instead of PBs?

Thanks. Just getting everything prepared now. The barrel has been given an airlock test so just sterilising everything at the moment

Should I add my secondary fermentation sugar into the FV and mix it up before transferring to the barrel? Or put the sugar into the barrel and then transfer the beer from the FV?

So, today's the day....... Just going to have a quick read up on the barreling process, just to make sure that I don't make any mistakes.

Thanks. I did previously wonder if it was 1.008 or so. I'll probably do as you say, just measure it Sunday.
