    Woodforde Admiral Reserve

Yeast has just gone in, pre yeast gravity nice and high at 1.050.

    Woodforde Admiral Reserve

Right, that's the Admiral's in the FV. Just waiting for it to cool enough to add the yeast.

    Woodforde Admiral Reserve

I might start this brew today then. I'll be using it as it is with nothing added as it's my first time with this kit. I'll be using mineral water from Aldi until I sort out home water treatment, which may simply just be tap water treated with campden tablets.

    Woodforde Admiral Reserve

That's interesting. Maybe I was given another one in error.

    Woodforde Admiral Reserve

I plan to brew this over the weekend. It comes with three packets of yeast, which seems excessive? What's the deal there? Also I have read that their yeasts supplied aren't much good, is this true? Thanks.

    Ale kits and different yeasts

Thanks so far. Talking of yeasts, is it worth trying different yeasts such as S-05 and Gervin rather than what comes in the wort kits? Nothing to do with gluten, just wondering if there's much difference in them?

    Ale kits and different yeasts

At the moment I'm brewing from wort kits, not set up to brew from grains, so he'll probably not be able to have a pint of my brew in that case.

    Filtering tap water

Coming back to this, brewing from wort kits, could I use tap water and just add campden tablets to remove any chlorine? I'm wondering if I need to go through the entire treatment/alkalinity etc if just brewing from kits?

    Geordie Winter Warmer

Also, if cold crashing now that it's barreled isn't a good idea, someone let me know and I'll bring it back indoors. Thanks. Edit: I'm still new to this, just read that this should have been done in the FV before secondary, so I've brought it back indoors.

    Geordie Winter Warmer

So, yes based on the calculation, the beer is as strong as the kit says it will be, so I've barrelled it. Nice dark colour from the spray malt, just looked a bit cloudy/sedimenty at the bottom of the FV. So, what I've done, is put the barrel in the garage now to crash cool is as I've read...

    Ale kits and different yeasts

Being rather new to this, I'm aware there are different types of yeast, but not really aware why and for what. The yeast which comes in the kits is fine I guess, but are there any other yeasts to use which could change how the brew tastes? Also, I'd like to try a yeast Suitable for coeliacs and...

    Geordie Winter Warmer

Hmm ok, that makes sense, maybe for some reason the SG should have been a little higher but it wasn't, but now perhaps there's no more sugars left to be fermented?

    Geordie Winter Warmer

    Starting was 1.042

    Geordie Winter Warmer

It's now been two weeks, the gravity is still 1.012. I guess that's that? Weak brew? Problem with it?
  15. MarconiBrew

    Geordie Winter Warmer

Yes hopefully the next week has it sorted.

    Geordie Winter Warmer

So, my first brew of this year, which is my second brew ever. I'm doing Geordie Winter Warmer, half brewing sugar and half spray malt. I'm using the water bucket temperature control which is doing a very good job keeping the brew at 20c. I started the brew on new years day and the cold water...

    DPD Scam?

Generally, the rule is to never follow a link which asks you to log in. All you'll do is be handing your information away. I've seen the DPD email, the whole messy format made it quite clear that it's a scam, coupled with the fact I'm not expecting anything and it's not to an email address used...

    Filtering tap water

I know there's a huge thread on water, but it's mainly about treating water. Instead of using plain tap water or using that and going through treatment processes, has anyone here any brewing experience with those in line cartridge filters fitted to the kitchen tap? I'm wondering if this would...

    Fermenting vessel heating

Results are in for my FV water jacket test. Lowest the water jacket falls to is 21c, with a peak of around 22.6c. Now that's a water jacket of about 50mm around it. With 23 liters of water in the FV, it's quite unlikely the brew will reach that peak, so I probed the brew which is just currently...

    Fermenting vessel heating

I look forward to starting my next brew this way, I bought a Woodforde's Admiral 32 pint kit as my next brew.
