    Does anyone use...

I’ve literally just finished hacking the below together, based on a 30 litre buffalo. I haven‘t worked out the total cost yet, but I know it was cheaper than a grainfather, but not as cheap as a brewmonk. I suppose the upside to this exercise is that I know now how a pid works, and when I want...

    Cold crashing sucks

I guess my hesitation to go down the Mylar balloon route is largely down to the space available. I’m not sure it would fit in my ferminator

    Cold crashing sucks

Thanks all for sharing your methods, a lot of food for thought! I think having mulled it over a lot, I’ll probably not bother cold crashing dry hopped beers in future, and otherwise crash with a starsan soaked rag or tinfoil over the hole!

    Belle Saison Fermentation Advice

Yeah belle saison never looked like stalling in my brew, it went off like a rocket!

Full volume mash with no sparge for 75 minutes?

I should say I also do a full volume biab mash with no sparge, but I build my recipe on the assumption that my efficiency is 60-65%

Full volume mash with no sparge for 75 minutes?

I usually just mash until I hit my target pre boil gravity personally, or up to an hour maximum, but I rarely do very big beers where efficiency suffers. I once done an imperial stout and mashed for 90 mins.

    Belle Saison Fermentation Advice

What I ended up doing was pitching at 20 degrees and leaving it there for 6 days before raising it by 1 degree per day up to 24 degrees, and then left it there for 2 days before cold crashing for a day and bottling. turned out very tasty and no bottle bombs yet! Ive since spoken to others that...

    Cold crashing sucks

But how do you prevent it? Brewed a batch last week (first batch in my new brew bucket mini with a blowoff tube), and foolishly cold crashed it without thinking, only to find it had inhaled about a litre of star san. I couldn’t consciously give this to anyone and it tasted funky, so I poured it...

    Colm89’s Brewdays

25 February 2021: Short and Shoddy Stovetop APA My afternoon freed up a bit work-wise yesterday, and I had a GEB custom grain kit for an 8 litre batch of American pale ale in the store that I had planned to brew this weekend, so I decided to repurpose it for a “short and shoddy” style brew in...

    Colm89’s Brewdays

Sorry, using Brewfather terminology, what I mean it was 97% of the way to fg (it was at 1.009 when target fg was 1.008). Probably should have said 97% fermented?

    Colm89’s Brewdays

Session IPA hit 97% attenuation on Friday so hit it with the dry hop, with the intention to begin a 24 hour cold crash on Monday, hit fg on Sunday and no change Monday so started the crash to 2 degrees about 11am. Sample tasted absolutely delicious. Got everything ready to bottle today at about...

    Colm89’s Brewdays

15 February 2021: Dead Pony Club Clone I have sort of fallen out of love with IPA’s recently, but always liked dead pony club, and needed something sessionable so thought I’d have a go at a clone of a beer I knew and enjoyed for a change. Had Monday off and a new ss brewtech brew bucket mini...

    Colm89’s Brewdays

Lost track of this thread a little bit! Bottled the saison last Sunday, which finished at 4.9%, quite a bit under the 6.3% target. I can only assume given how much darker it was than I expected that something was wrong with the custom grain kit I ordered. Part of me hopes it’s a nice beer so my...

    Coffee

I personally find it much more consistent, but I didn’t have a PID on my gaggia. Also the real beauty of the robot is the warm up time, or rather the lack there of.

    Coffee

Haven’t noticed this thread before, I’ve had a gaggia classic and various different grinders for years, but rarely drink milky coffees and I’m the only coffee drinker in the house so recently upgraded to a cafelat robot and 1zpresso jxpro

Have I filled my 5L FV too much

What yeast did you use? It’ll probably all drop to the bottom before it erupts so I wouldn’t worry much beyond catching the overflow

All Grain Brew - Topping Up With Water

In the recipe page, under the equipment heading, there is a pencil icon on the right hand side. Open that. Set your batch volume to the final volume including water (in your case 23 litres), and scroll down a bit to the line called fermenter top up. Add your 3 litres in there, and it’ll scale...

All Grain Brew - Topping Up With Water

If you set up an equipment profile in Brewfather and include 3 litres (or more accounting for boil off) of top up water then the calculations should adjust the recipe to suit.
