    Extractor hood

I bought a large industrial extractor from ebay a few years ago. It cost about £30 and my boiler sits below it. I had planned to make a hood and connect it to the extractor, but instead I mounted it to a piece of plywood and hung it in an open window. It works very well and even at this time...

    Brew Day Records

I came across this record sheet a few years ago. I use it for every brew day and its great to look back on old recipes. I note all my brew timings on the back and have noticed I am getting quicker after 35 brews.... I have also attached a brew day log sheet. I don't use this one but you...

Hop Spider or no Hop Spider

I bought a spider a couple of years ago and had the same issues. I went back to putting the hops in a muslin bag and have had no issues since. I believe the holes in my spider are not big enough to allow the wort to circulate through the hops, maybe you are having the same issue?

Removing mold from the brass valve fitting

I've just done the same thing. I put mine in to a small cup of Pepsi Cola for a couple of days. It came out looking like new....

Do you use Star San as per the instructions?

I've been using Star San for a couple of years, excellent stuff. I make it up in a spray bottle and just spray everything that comes into contact with post boil wort. I don't use a cloth or anything and I don't wait for it to dry. Never had any issues so far.

    Sanitisation question

Malt Miller still have some Star San. I bought some from them last week. https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/star-san-4oz/ And yes, I re-use Star San. Just need to check the PH is 3 or lower. I store a 5 litre container of distilled water made up with Star San, had it for months and...

Trip to Belgium/France, which breweries should I visit?

+1 for the Halve Maan brewery in Bruges. I went there in April, nice bit of history but you don’t see much current brewing. The beer at the end of the tour was amazing.

    Fermenting Temperatures Again

Get yourself a fridge, 45watt tube heater from ebay or amazon and an Inkbird 308 temperature controller. Its a simple setup that works really well. You will get lots of opinions on here about how to set it up. Personally, i bought an old second hand fridge, cleaned it, put the cables for the...

    Kegerator question

I have a larder fridge with 2 cornies in it. I have two taps on the door with all the pipework inside the fridge. i don't disconnect mine at all and have not had any problems. The only thing i do is take the removable spout off the tap and rinse it after use as it holds a little beer in there...

    How do you brew?

I use a 3 vessel system that I made myself. I looked at the all in one systems but couldn't bring myself to spend hundreds of pounds on equipment. So I put a couple of kettle elements in to an old FV for my HLT. I made my mash tun out of a picnic cooler. I made my boiler from a stainless pot...

    Wort contamination

Whilst pitching the yeast at the end of a brew day, I dropped the rusty shed keys in my fermenter, then plunged my unsanitised arm in to the wort to retrieve the keys. Beer was fine.

Cleaning your stainless steel? (SS brewbuckets)

I have been using VWP on my stainless boiler for the last year with no ill effect. It gets a soak in VWP and then a good rinse and left to dry. (My boiler is not a SS Brewbucket, not sure if different manufacturers use different types of stainless steel?)
