    Help reading water report

Hi Steve ... I would have thought that some of the reasoning to use that measure would also be about the fact that limestone (CaCO3) is one of the most abundant of the soluble minerals that are likely to be dissolved in drinking water (here in Europe/North America, anyway) so it is likely that...

    Belgian Mild

Hi @Ajhutch For me, a little bit of Special B will always add a "Belgian" impression ... if you just chew on a few grains of it you'll see it's like a solid version of Leffe Brun, IMHO :?: ... you may want to consider adding a touch of that into the mix, just about 75-100g or so wink...

British beers - flatness and head

... Nope, it just eliminates the beer too thin to form/retain a head theory :?: Cheers, PhilB

British beers - flatness and head

Hi @Dulwich North Another thing to check ... what were your FGs on those brews with poor heads? I ask because, when I first started AG brewing I had a few brews that ended up with higher attenuations, ending up at lower FGs, than expected ... while those beers seemed to taste fine they had...

Reusing yeast by adding fresh wort on top of the yeast cake

Hi @obscure Under-pitching is the more commonly experienced and thus the more often written about/discussed topic, when it comes to yeast pitching rates ... but over-pitching of yeast is a thing ... and pitching a volume of wort onto a yeast cake from a ferment of a similar volume of wort with...

    Help with a quiz please

... Aunty Elspeth wants to know whether those figures for volume and gravity are at the start or end of boil, if at start what's the boil off rate, how many decimal places you want the answer to and whether there's any malted milk biscuits left in the tin? :confused.: Cheers, PhilB

    Best opening song lyrics.

I like it when songs give you a bit of context or back story in the opening lines, which I guess this has to be one of my favourite starts ... ... Billy Bragg, A New England ... but there's no mention of hazy, juicy IPAs in the whole of the rest of the lyrics :confused.: Cheers, PhilB

    Covid-19 the second wave.

H Simon ... I don't think you're reading those numbers correctly ... you need to think about how the trial will have been structured, it's probably the case that near the start they didn't know whether you would need one, two or however many doses of the vaccine ... that 4,543 number are those...

    What about a poetry thread?

One particularly appropriate for today ... whilst Thackeray wrote these as lyrics of a song, I think these words work as poetry. Cheers, PhilB The Remembrance Jake Thackray Remember the bands and the grand parades, The flags, the banners, the fine cockades, And how we all looked up to see the...

4 week grain to glass recipe

Hi @Nicks90 Like @MickDundee suggests, hefeweizen is usually the "go-to" beer for quick turnarounds ... but for a variation on the theme, I'd suggest the Rye-Wit included in the set of session beer recipes over there (link) ... it's low ABV so won't need time to let too much alcohol flavour...

    Efficiency,sparging and mash tuns..

Hi Clint ... I agree with what Steve's said there, but you need to recognise that that's only comparing the efficiency drop caused by sparging (the reduction from post-mash efficiency to the pre-boil efficiency) ... the recirculating mash of all-in-one systems will tend to increase...

    Covid-19 the second wave.

... I think you're right, but the problem is that the means of asking "all those who test positive" is the (agreed by just about everyone to be fundamentally flawed) "test, trace and isolate" system ... as far as I understand it, when a contact tracer contacts someone who has recently tested...

    Covid-19 the second wave.

... it seems the government has now backtracked on that decision, and will allow takeaway alcohol sales ... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54803070 ... there's still the small matter of the pub needing to arrange a pre-ordering mechanism, and customers won't be allowed inside ... but I'm...

    South Cheshire Ingredients Buying Club

Hi All I mentioned earlier in the thread that I'd had the benefit of an impromptu brewery tour on one occasion when I'd been to Staffs Brewery and, in light of the passions showing themselves in the discussion above, I thought I'd share some of the info I gleaned, to give some context...

    I need some beer!!

... but if you do find yourself in California, I'd highly recommend getting yourself along to Santa Rosa and go to the Russian River Brewpub, the Pliny there is straight from the brewery, the pizzas are good and they'll also serve you a flight of ALL the beers they have on tap at the time ...

... but then Malt Miller's busines is predominantly online AIUI, and the courier costs of delivering these is always going to make them uncompetitive for such businesses :?: This is the sort of product that'll suit LHBSs, perhaps doing deals with local breweries, more :?: Cheers, PhilB

    Aromatic malt.

Hi Clint If you're buying from MM I think you're safe from this ... but for others coming to this thread, beware the confusion between Aromatic Malt (e.g. Dingemans (link)) and Weyermann's CaraAroma (link) that can happen with some retailers ... I think the page on the HBC website is the...
