    BIAB is superior............

For some unknown reason i decided to do my first mini-mash on Sunday using a Coopers Euro Lager kit and an assortment of dark malts to hopefully end up with a black "Budvar" type lager. There was probably around 1kg of malts in my bag in my small pot on the hob and maybe down to never doing it...

Always make sure it's in properly!

Me and the missus was feeling a bit corny at the weekend so i gave her my spigot to have a play with. Sadly the night ended in disaster when I opened my relief valve prematurely and sparged over her fermenting bucket!! :drink:

Aaghh, I also had a first all grain brew attempt

I would guess that if you are doing a beer with such a high SG you will need a more resilient "high alcohol" variety

Disappointing Head on my Bottled Coopers Stout

I had never heard of this until last night but after trying with a particularly flat ale I brewed was astounded by the result. It was better than a good hand pulled cask ale in the pub!!

Disappointing Head on my Bottled Coopers Stout

I have found that carbonation fades in the plastic coopers PET bottles. and cheat and use a nucleated glass :thumb: which will make the beer less fizzy but give a good lasting head.

    Carbon Neutral Homebrewing?

    Patience

Too right, I would always put a lager emphasis on largering larger for the lagerest period of time you can

    Patience

It all depends on what you are brewing surely: :wha: IPA / light ale - 2-3 weeks fermentation, rack, settle for a week in the cold, bottle Stouts / Porters - 2 weeks fermentation, rack, bottle Hefeweizen - 1.5 weeks fermentation, rack, bottle Lager - 4+ weeks fermentation, rack, finish...

    Direct pitch White Labs Yeast

I used to pitch direct to 25-26l and had a lag time of up to 48 hours which was ridiculous. On my last Hefe i used a starter made from 1.5l of wort and it was bubbling fervently after 3 hours ;)

    Competition feedback on beers

I think 1 tsp of irish moss might be too much for 10l - too much will reduce head retention

    A liquid diet....with a difference

Other than the first day you do it, its relatively easy - its mostly in the mind. First day you will feel dizzy / sick / tired / lethargic etc I would recommend getting a decent fast diet cook book too so you can still have decent nosh on yer fast days ;)

    Shopping Excitement

I spent £190 on my last grain & hops order. It is soooo tempting to try a new kind of hop and buy grain in bulk to save money and try some new yeast and oooh get some more star-san and try some extra special aromatic belgian abbey grains which i will probably never use in a brew but look good...
