    Clean bottles

I do the same as @yeastinfection. I rinse the bottle when I've poured my beer (to stop yeast drying onto the inside of the bottle) Then they go through the dishwasher which makes them clean and shiny, and also, importantly, they are dry on the inside. Then they get stored in the garage until...

Your First Grainfather Brew - A Walkthrough

Thanks for this write up @strange-steve, very thorough and useful. I have a couple of questions: Does anybody have any ideas why my top grain plate keeps collapsing into the grain during the mash? Happened on the last 3 brews. Came back to the GF at the end of mash-out and found the top plate...

5 litre Batches of Beer. Why?

This is a very timely thread. I do occasional 5L brews. Lots of good reasons to brew 5L: Small enough to do in the kitchen, so not banished to the shed. Can just use a cooker gas ring for the boil, and not too much steam. Quite a bit quicker than 23L, because of heating times. Great...

    Giving up with pressure barrels

You've done well going 8 years before dumping your PB. I chucked mine after my very 1st brew. Mind you it was part of a very cheap starter set, so maybe not the best PB. But I think @Sadfield might be right, maybe some hard to shift wild yeast in your PB? Could you borrow or buy a new PB to see...

Beer of the Month (January 2019)

I'm going to try this one in February, not January (sorry). I've asked for the Rochefort mixed crate plus cheese for my birthday next month.

Beer of the Month (January 2019)

Thanks for the list of Belgian beer sellers @Zephyr259 I've just seen that Belgium in a Box do a Rochefort bundle: 6 Rochefort 6 6 Rochefort 8 12 Rochfort 10 In a lovely Rochefort beer crate Plus 2 Rochefort glasses and a Rochefort cheese! All for €85 That's about £3.15 per bottle and free...

Beer of the Month (January 2019)

I love Rochefort 10. I got a couple in an Abbey/Trappiste selection pack from BeerWulf last year. BeerWulf do it for £3.99 a bottle. But £4.95 shipping, or free shipping if you buy 16 bottles (of any variety)

    hallertau hops

If they are just labelled 'Hallertau' without any 2nd part, they are probably 'Mittlefrüh'.... I think. I may be retracting this post after a quick Google... aunsure....

    5L Demijohn Mini Cider Brews

Good plan. I reckon the simpler the better for syphons.

    5L Demijohn Mini Cider Brews

..oh, and the tubing was a nasty hard plastic, and was quite hard to handle, so I replaced it with a bit of silicone tube. So not much left of the original .

    5L Demijohn Mini Cider Brews

I've actually got one of those. Not used it much, but the pump thing does work to prime the syphon. It doesn't come with a stiff racking cane, so I took the racking cane off a simple syphon and cobbled together a hybrid. But since I got the Speidel mini-FV with a tap, I've not had much cause to...

    5L Demijohn Mini Cider Brews

I never had any joy with an autosyphon either. It seemed to suck air through with it, and would often stop working mid-syphon. I just got a really cheap simple syphon from Wilko. I'm not great with syphons, but it works OK. I prime it with water to start it off...

    5L Demijohn Mini Cider Brews

I also do cider in a 5L demijohn, for the same reasons - 23L would be too much cider for me. I still use a bottling bucket though, as I find syphoning into bottles a bit tricky. I find it difficult to keep an eye on both ends of the syphon at once. So I just syphon from the DJ into the...

Beer of the Month (December 2018)

I really like this idea. I am going to pop out to night and get one of these, even if I have to drive up the road to Harrogate. My only concern is that a month is a long time to wait for the next beer of the month. How about beer of the week? :beer1:
