Plate heat exchangers and cold break in the FV?

I think your right JP, just tried the Sierra Nevada clone last night, its been in the bottle for just over 2 weeks so it has time to improve but it was lush. Will try it out of the cornie at the weekend as my summer bitter cornie should be just about empty and ready to receive the next brew. I...

Plate heat exchangers and cold break in the FV?

Some of my work colleagues are physicists, I've posed them the following question. :D "Scenario :- a liquid (beer wort) is being cooled by passing it through a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is a plate heat exchanger which has cooling water of a constant input temp and flow that is lower...

    All grain smell

There's a good chance of them smelling it, especially if the wind is in the wrong direction, would your neighbours ignore it for the occasional bottle of homebrew? If not boil some cabbage in your garage until they scream for you to start brewing :D

    sports beer?

Seeing as sports drinks are 99% marketing and 1% science, and all taste crap, I was wondering if there would be a market for a mildly alcoholic hypotonic ale that tasted half decent, might as well as enjoy yourself while being fleeced. An isotonic drink has to have similar salt and sugar levels...

Introduction - and Dutch beer trip!

No knocking intended :D just remembered the name of the pub - the Wayfarers. seems to have had a 750K refurb, looks a bit posher than it was in my day.

Introduction - and Dutch beer trip!

Welcome aboard  I spent a large part of my late teens at the BT training centre just outside Stone. Large facility with several thousand engineers away from home for a couple of weeks. Happy days, I seem to remember the local pub was quite sedate but a pub about a mile away used to be...

    My new malt miller

this is similar to what I bought - I got 5 for 25 quid - there are loads around som probably somebody selling them near you as carriage is expensive.

Plate heat exchangers and cold break in the FV?

Thanks for that Aleman :D - looks like I'll continue doing what I'm doing and just wait a little longer. If WLP810 turns out to be as versatile a yeast as the feedback then I may use this as my preferred yeast as there will be no need to use a FV cupboard for keeping the temp up. I'll need...

    My new malt miller

I use ex-sweet containers - big blue tubs about 35 litres each, lids have big metal sprung clamps to hold them on, I think they were about 5 quid each off fleabay but I collected them to save cost - somewhere near Selby.

Plate heat exchangers and cold break in the FV?

Sounds like we concur  I feel better now - just thought I may have been missing a trick :D

Plate heat exchangers and cold break in the FV?

I've been fermenting on the cold break since moving to the new shiny. So far I've done 5 brews. The first two were pants due to a metallic taint caused by flux from the soldering process and/or keeping a starsan solution (slightly acidic) in the plate heat exchanger - with copper and steel and...

Plate heat exchangers and cold break in the FV?

Bru4u, whirlpool? do you mean give it a good stir to get the cold break to settle out? :D What do you use post fermentation for filtering? Cheers NB

Plate heat exchangers and cold break in the FV?

Cheers - I have an Aleman designed hop filter so should be good to go this way, but of a pain to take it apart and clean it but its never got blocked so far.

Plate heat exchangers and cold break in the FV?

Just wondering how others do this. Currently I cool the post boil wort through the plate heat exchanger directly into the FV, benefits is ease/speed of use and not disturbing the hot break however on the last 80L brew I took about 4L of cold break out of the bottom of the conical FV. The PHE...

    SWMBO beer

Thanks Pitsy - I had a few SWMBO moments financing it- however I pointed out that the total cost was but a fraction of the neighbours mid-life crisis sports car - probably less than a service, and he looks a pillock in it with his flat cap on :D Making it yourself certainly lowers the cost...

    SWMBO beer

Here's the photos the starter - note the high tech method of sealing the aeration pipe ;) The grain bill doughing in recirculating the mash sparge the pirate who brought the precious Nelson Sauvin all the way from New Zealand the boil - you could see the lupilin staining the...
