New car sales plunge 20% in September

I just bought a new car... BMW M3 in full GT race spec. Does about 5 MPG (1 litre per mile). I won't be using it for commuting though.

Milk Stout Recipe (my first ever stout)

My thoughts exactly! If the beer was in the FV for only 4 days, that is a very short time, whether its finished or not. I would have left it at least 14 days, before considering bottling.

    Substitution...

I've used LME in some high gravity brews i.e. I turn my extra stout into imperial by adding LME to my pre-boiled wort. I find it quite tricky to mash shedloads of grain with my equipment and the higher the grain input, the lower the gravity return. So, in effect I'm doing a normal mash to...

August competition - British Pales, Bitters & Milds

@Dads_Ale I see your a fan of Watneys beer - Red Barrel no less... By all accounts a splendid beer... Ron Pattison has a section in his blog "How to brew Watneys Red Barrel"... http://barclayperkins.blogspot.com/search/label/Red%20Barrel I've lumped together other Watneys blog posts too.

    Wort chiller

I've got this one... https://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?WD=chiller&PN=Very-Large-Stainless-1-2-Wort-Chiller-50-foot-15-meters%2ehtml#SID=168 It's very good, gets my wort below 20c in less than 20 minutes. It fits my 40L boiler nicely too. I think when I bought mine, it...

Funky smell 25 litres down the drain

I suspect your wort and spent grains (with residual wort) were infected in the same way. In most cases the funkyness taints the beer even after boiling the wort. Like you, I left wort un-boiled for a period once, but did ferment and bottle. Wasn't worth the effort!

    Purpose of hop additions?

I only add hops during the boil phase i.e. at start of boil to 5 minutes before the end of the boil. Like other new fangled stuff, I've never dry hopped, added before boil, at flame out or any other hop malarkey. Seems like my beers have good bittering, flavour and aroma qualities. Whoever...

    My Professional Basement Brewery

That's what I thought... Then I thought, hold on a minute, it's almost exactly identical to my brew house! Except for the shinyness and mine is mostly plastic stuff from the car boot sale and an old bucket and wooden spoon. Oh and I've got an on/off switch for my boiler too. o_O Seriously, it...

Newbie brewer who is super confused

I attach a fan to the top of my kettle, pointing at the wort. When nearing boiling point, I turn the fan on. This stops boil-over. When the danger of boil-over has passed, then I turn the fan off.

    Head retention issues!!!

In my experience its quite hard to get good head retention on low ABV British type ales. If the beer is on the thin side, no amount of foam positive stuff will help. To me this is a double edged sword, by the time I've added this and that, and done the other, am I really brewing what I intended...

    Trub help, please.

That's true... I often can have two opinions on the same topic. Anyway I was justifying my laziness and I'm happy that others are going the extra mile (for no benefit). ;)

    Trub help, please.

That was a jolly good read... I'm one of those lazy buggers who dumps everything from the boiler into the FV... My beers almost always are super clear and I think are lovely to drink... From that experiment its seems the more kettle muck you transfer to the FV you end up with a clearer beer with...

    Trub help, please.

No need to filter.... I do a boil, add hops, cool and tip the lot into the FV, job done. My beer comes out crystal clear and lovely. I've never had issues transferring all the gunk. A lot of brewers like to filter out the hops or use something to keep them seperate, but I'm happy with what I do.

    Brupaks...

Yeah, I checked that too. I think its a site under development, so no bargain malt for me.

Bottling and Priming 3 questions please

It should not be re-used if injecting stuff into your arm, bum or guinea-pig. Re-using for injecting into a bottle is fine, but not if you injected your guinea-pig first.

    Brupaks...

Huh... Just went to checkout for a test, the only payment option is cash on delivery, strikes me as odd. Might end up paying 50 quid for a sack of spuds! Flat 6 quid delivery charge is good though!

    Brupaks...

Funny thing is those 7 hops type are my regular hops. Also they have everything grain wise that I use too. The prices are very very good for a home brewer, but I feel slightly uneasy though... Brupaks have a website at brupaks.com, this website is brupaks.koruna.co.uk ... Just wondering if its...

    Brupaks...

I've been looking at this site to buy some grain... http://brupaks.koruna.co.uk/ Crisp Maris Otter @ 19.50 for 25kg seems a good price. Anyone bought from these guys?

    Transferring between fermenters after 48hrs

It will be fine... Some breweries do it on purpose a day or two into the fermenting process.
