    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Glad you did, didn'y see the earlier post, I left mine in the greenhouse too long one year and it died. Thankfully it hasn't been that warm yet. Mine aren't doing anything, been a very cold Spring so far with little sunshine here.

    Brewuk website "down for maintenance"

I'm still seeing the website: The website is currently down for maintenance. Please check back soon. I'll be disappointed if they go, for me they were the best place for price vs quality of AG ingredients. MM is great but costs 25% more for some of the things I regularly order, I used to shop...

    Brewuk website "down for maintenance"

I had an order from them about a week ago, couldn't get some of the grains I wanted but most were in stock. It was delivered promptly as usual. Be interesting to know why you think they went downhill? I've been round all the big names, I started with BrewUK then eventually came back to them...

Pub beer/Kit beer taste alike list

Yes it was. Pub wasn't that great though, so suspect it wasn't that well looked after. A bit disappointing though, it was 10 years since brewing the kit for the 1st time and I'd been really looking forward to trying it. Anyone over on the East Coast where it's more common got a view? Another...

Pub beer/Kit beer taste alike list

It's not, the two are quite different, to my taste anyway: prefer the kit, when I found the real thing in a London pub it was a real disappointment.

    St Peters Golden Ale Problems

Not used that before but that sounds right, give it a go. Worth giving it a gentle stir and keeping it on the warm side, try to get it to 21/22C.

    Stuck Fermentation

That is your answer: Windsor yeast is low-attenuating, so it might not be stuck with that yeast, it could well be finished. Google the yeast and you'll see the discussions on this yeast on various homebrew forums over the years. You could try another yeast in there to get it down further, but...

    St Peters Golden Ale Problems

Must be the yeast. The kit may have been stored too warm/long by the shop and the yeast degraded. Put another packet of yeast in, the Wilko Gervin yeast is a good option if you have a shop near you.

    Guitar solos

So a few Rush fans on here. Checkout the tribute act Bravado, they are simply amazing, playing here again in Gloucester in 2 weeks time, last time they played for 3 hours! Professional musicians who do the Rush stuff on the side, so don't do too many gigs. https://www.planetbravado.com/

    Solving solvent flavours

I've had problems with this on and off over the years, just the occasional brew. It's been hard to track down but I think it's been due to too high a temperature as it's not every beer just the occasional one. I'll probably get shot down for this but I used to measure mash pH and adjust but TBH...

    Wood burners

Love my woodburner too. Just chopped down 16 trees so that's the fuel for next winter, or the one after. Often go foraging up the local green lane, wind brings down dead trees which go into my woodstore. Plenty of smoke sources other than woodburners e.g. bonfires, lit one recently than burned...

    Curry...!!

So, a question for the hive mind - I can never get that strong garlic flavour that you get with a restaurant curry. I put loads in, but it still doesn't work. Any thoughts?

    Curry...!!

How did you put them in, whole or sliced? Got a tip from a mate of mine who originates from Guyana, he swears by his mum's curry and she pierces the chillis and puts them in the cooking, regularly tasting for heat and then removes them when it's right. Must try this.

    What did you brew today?

My plans quickly changed today as I had less grain left than I thought so did a use-up brew, sort-of Draught Bass but with some late hops to use up my home-grown Challenger, OG 1044, IBU 27, Maris Otter, Crystal and Challenger at 60/10/0.

    Curry...!!

Looks great, I would say that's making me hungry but I've just wolfed down a Madras as per Latif's Inspired Youtube channel, washed down with a couple of homebrew cloned Titanic Icebergs.

    Struggling to hit target OG

So you buy uncrushed grain and mill the grain yourself, with a new grain mill, and now you get a poor result? There is your answer.

Rumour? is Wilko's going into administration?

There's one right by my office so I go in there a lot, buying homebrew bits and seeds for the garden. Always seems busy but stock levels have been poor for a while, really hope they don't go under, not much else left in town if they do.

    Mini Kegs.

As above, I used to recycle them but got the metallic taste so ditched them. These are much better and my staple now: I've got 2 and also bottle. They're stainless-steel so easy to clean and re-use, had mine for a few years now. Other companies make them, a bit expensive but suit me, I use...

Thoughts on an attempted Spitfire clone...

I'd drop the amount of Target / IBU, Target can be quite a harsh bittering hop and only suits certain beers, it's quite distinctive. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with it and use it with caution. I don't remember Spitfire being that harsh so I'd go for 30-35 IBU. There's a few clone...

    Why are my beers dark?

I was sceptical about shaking (I always shook my bottles to mix up the priming sugar) but it's correct, it does impact, I now no longer shake. One other thought: do you have a reference for the colour expected i.e are the beers you made darker than intended, or is that just the way the kit...
