    Historical Brewing Techniques (Lars Garshol)

I got my copy in a few minutes ago. First impressions; it is nice glossy edition with lots of pictures and illustrations. The style seems a bit more story-telling than I expected - but this is not a bad thing. Eager to dive into this one.

    Brewnaldos brewday

That means you have an 86 percent mash efficiency - quite a bit higher than mine. If you really want to get a predictable FG I would advise to look at some brewing software like Brewfather, and dail in your equipment. I think the free version allows you to make up to 10 recipes. In this case it...

    Brewnaldos brewday

How did your brewday go? Did you really mean pre-boil gravity? (the gravity after mashing, but before boiling?) In that case you might end up with a higher ABV beer ;-)

I asked for an update since mine was also delayed. The new expected day of arrival is Tuesday May 19th. I ordered mine from the Dutch webshop bol.com.

Help with piecing together a recipe....

Magnum is a clean bittering hop, it does not really impart much flavour. Any high AA hop with a clean profile will do as a replacement. Columbus or Northern Brewer will do fine. btw Northern Brewer is in usually lower in AA, so you might need to add a bit more to get the same bittering effect.

Help with piecing together a recipe....

oxygen and beer seem a bit paradoxical. When you boil your wort all the oxygen is boiled out - but yeast needs oxygen to multiply and build cell walls. This is why you see brewers splash, shake, and oxygenate beer after cooling it down To supply the yeast with oxygen. There are those that are...

Help with piecing together a recipe....

TS messaged me the original beer (which I will not share) - so I was able to dail in the recipe a bit more. By the sound of it they use WLP060 yeast - but I'll stick with US-05 for sake of simplicity and availability. This means the beer overshoots the ABV by 0.1 percent. Otherwise I think this...

Help with piecing together a recipe....

All your whirlpool hops are in the same ballpark when it comes to AA (they are usually between 11 and 14 percent). So a 30 minute hopstand @ 80C will give about 3.5 IBU at 12 percent AA and 3.8 IBU at 13 percent AA (both 15 grams). So this is what my software returns: 12 g (16 IBU) — Magnum 12%...

Giving absolute numbers without knowing the ingredients, your brewing setup, or the numbers you are shooting for is really difficult - if not impossible. I would advise on using some brewing software, like brewfather. Did the brewer give you some useful data like IBU? To give you an idication...

Goodbye EU - 2 nights in Brussels

I'll second Cantillon; but here are some less obvious choices: Brewery De La Senne A bit of a local darling. I adore their zennepils. Much preferable over Leffe and Stella (which is in Leuven - and further away than Pajottenland: Pajottenland, home to lambics, is around the corner and makes...

Your stuck in Quarantine with a forum member what one would you choose

It seems I've created a monster with these quarantine threads :laugh8: Have not been around long enough to chip in - who is seen as the forum authority on sours? or lagers? I guess I'd hang out with them ;-)

How many litres of home brew 2020.

I have recently joined the forum so I have a bit of a backlog of beers to add (2020 has been the most productive in my homebrew life): 19 liters Dortmunder Export lager (perhaps the best beer I've ever made) 19 liters Margarita Gose (classic gose with tequila and lime - a clown brew for a...

    Historical Brewing Techniques (Lars Garshol)

I live in the Netherlands and could preorder it through my local online store (bol.com) for 23.99 euro. Good to hear you have been able to put an order in. I've seen that some people actually received their books early. One can hope... One of the few advantages of this pandemic is that a lot...

You're stuck in quarantine with only one beer

I initially planned to ask for all of your 'stuck on a deserted island with only one beer' choice - but decided that a 'stuck in quarantine with only one beer' topic is more topical. The idea is that you choose one type of beer - and that beer is the only beer that you can drink for a very long...

    Historical Brewing Techniques (Lars Garshol)

This book has technically not been released yet (release date 30 April 2020) but I'm quite excited for it's release. The author, Lars Garshol, has become a bit of an authority on Norwegian farmhouse brewing and Kveik. If you have not had to pleasure to read some of his work you can find his...

Hi PhilB, Seems you also made the jump - nice to see a friendly face :hat: (and no you were not). Although I never got around to give you feedback on that herfstbok. It has been a while and I don't remember too much specifics. A bit on the sweet side but nice? I'm sure it was based on the...

Hard question to answer; but my stuck on a deserted island with only one beer choice would be Saison Dupont. I really enjoy Belgian lambics and geuzes, Orval, Rodenbach. I like German helles and gose. Or a good bitter IPA. When Iook at my own brewing I can see that I enjoy making simple beers...

    Another new member introducing himself

Hi all, A kind greeting from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I'm new to this forum but I'm an experienced home brewer (been brewing for about 7 years now). I've lived in Oxford for about three years and always had a soft spot for British beer and beer talk. I used to post and lurk around the...
