Pre-boil wort volume for 11 litres brew in a bag

How much sparge water did you actually use? Is this as simple as the difference between 4 and 6 litres Sparge water being the 2 litres you seem to be missing? Even if you did make the 14L pre-boil, it doesn’t seem impossible that your system losses from boil-off, kettle and fermenter trub...

    Kveik

I’m going to do the same - my golden ale with L.Voss is just a little too fruity. Although I only managed to maintain about 30° during fermentation, I’m going to aim for normal ambient temperature, so 20ish° next time, to try and get it less orange forward. Might up my nutrients too, and pitch...

Can I add a packet of hops to a 40 pint brew of lager

It’s all relative. Ideally 22° should really be as hot as you’d want an traditional ale yeast to go during active fermentation - so try and keep your second batch around 18-20° max (a simple water bath in a flexi-tub or similar could be a good idea), but ambient temps at the mo should see to...

Can I add a packet of hops to a 40 pint brew of lager

In 20L that would give you about 2.2 volumes of CO2, which is low-ish, but it will still have some fizz. Personally I’d aim for higher (2.4+), particularly in a lager-like, but don’t panic - it will be fine! It’s all a learning curve and you can up your carbonation if you feel you want to in...

    AMyd666 Brewday

How are you finding your Voss pale/lager thing? I see in another thread that you’re drinking it! Mine is pretty clear now, but it is overwhelmingly fruity (that famous Voss orange). Admittedly it’s only been in the bottle a week, so hoping once fully carbed, laid down for a bit and fully...

Can I add a packet of hops to a 40 pint brew of lager

Brilliant! Still planning on batch priming your brews? Looks like your first batch has finished around 1.008 (taking into account your fishy hydro, it may even be lower, hope you like dry beer acheers. ) and the second batch has an OG of 1.040ish, so if your first batch was similar you’re...

Apples in brewing - Anyone tried?

I’ve not done it but I think your idea for using dried apple is a sound one. The trick is going to be not ending up with something too cidery, of course. I’d be inclined to use dehydrated blackberries as well as apple and add as a kind of ‘dry fruiting’ after primary fermentation of the wort is...

    Yaldi IPA

Wow, I can’t believe it can be that bad! Some of Aldi’s other ‘craft’-style offerings are pretty ok (feint praise as that is). I am actually intrigued to see how bad it can really be - I’m off to Aldi tomorrow to see if they have any. 😁 Personally, being more of a session pale fan, I’m waiting...

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Year 3 for my single Goldings plant. Lots and lots and lots of lovely cones this year 😁 .

Graham Wheelers Adnams Broadside, anyone brewed it?

Come on! You’ve gone to all this trouble - the least you could do is brew with it! 😁 Doesn’t have to be an Adnams clone, anything traditional and British ale-ish will do.acheers.

    Hop plants/rhizomes - growing report

Looking good! So is this your first year with a crop? NM: just reread your post and see you said it was only year 2  In which case, how are you going to use them this year? Drying? Brewing wet?

Can I add a packet of hops to a 40 pint brew of lager

I see yours doesn’t say Stevenson Reeves LTD at the bottom. Not that that’s necessarily an issue. Was this an eBay or Amazon marketplace purchase by any chance? Just that if it’s a generic hydrometer rather than a branded one, there might be a higher chance that QA is not as thorough as you’d...

Can I add a packet of hops to a 40 pint brew of lager

Take a look at your hydro at the bottom of the shaft. It should say its calibration temp. Mine is 20°.

Can I add a packet of hops to a 40 pint brew of lager

That is strange. AFAIK hydrometers are generally calibrated at 20° for general ambient/tap water temp.

    Wilko Hoppy Bitter

Orange squash infused bitter is the new grapefruit/mango/dangleberry infused IPA. They’re all on it down Shoreditch, donchaknow.

    Local hops

I wouldn’t want to try it - even on a low heat in a mesh bag. Ripe hop cones are very delicate and fall apart very easily - if you put them in loose they’d just clog your dryer filters. I think you’d also lose too much resin due to the agitation. Can you put them in an airing cupboard? Or use v...

    Local hops

I have something like this: It’s a net flower dryer. I hang it from the ceiling of my garage attic where it’s dark and warm. All dried naturally in 2-3 days (admittedly I didn’t have a big harvest last year).

    Local hops

Ooh, now that’s a question! Hop harvesting is definitely an art! The cones will mature at different rates, but each will remain at the peak time for picking for only a few days. Pick them too early and they’ll impart grassy flavours in your beer, leave them too late and the lupulin (the yellow...
