    Re-using yeast from current brew

Avoid pitching directly onto the yeast cake. You want to crop from a fairly low abv beer, we would aim for taking it off a 1040 beer. Obviously you only want to be taking it off a healthy beer also - you do not want any yeast from a beer that has potentially picked up an infection. Best...

    PH Test Strips

I take a reading about 15mins into the mash and adjust accordingly if it is out of my target range. I'd then take a reading pre and post fermentation - mainly as reference if I have any issues with the beer further down the line. I would say however that once you have your water treatment...

    PH Test Strips

We use the strips after CIP for confirm caustic has gone and PAA is there. Would say get yourself ph monitor for brewing over the strips. Can pick them up fairly cheap on eBay and once calibrated are much more accurate

    Does it get expensive?

It can definitely get expensive! Started off with "two can" kits - moved to all grain with an all in one and couple of fermzillas - then moved to a 400litre kit with 3 FVs and CTs - now contract/cuckooing 1700 litre brews!!! My hobby got a little bit out of hand 🤣

Some pointers on yeast (harvesting and health in general)

I've never used Kveik yeast but from a commercial point of view I would never harvest yeast from a 10% beer, anything over 1.040 and the view is that our house yeast will have been overworked and stressed (again i don't have any experience of kveik so just an FYI on that part). May be worth...

    Cask Condition

Thanks Peebee, I was actually looking for info on how this is done on a commercial scale, ie how casks are prepared for pubs, not to replicate at home. Thanks for the piece though, definitely some takeaway points from it.

    Cask Condition

Any one able to provide a good guide on how to cask condition beer. My thoughts are its similar to bottle conditioning. Beer into cask before final gravity is reached, finings in, seal cask, wait a couple of weeks (?)...how far off am I?

    Hydrometer

Cheers guys, like the idea of the tilt but like I say don't fancy buying 2 or 3. Was hoping to find a digital one but I don't fancy spending c.£2k on one 😄. Off to wilkos for another glass one which I'll break in another couple of weeks!!

    Hydrometer

Do you find it pretty accurate and easy to take your readings from? Also do you need to do any conversions with the readings? I feel like inread something before that it wasn't as straight forward as using a hydrometer

    Hydrometer

I've just smashed my hydrometer (again 🙈) so needing to pick up another. Can you buy digital hydrometer that doesn't sit in the fermenter. I like the idea of the Tilt but I have 3 or 4 fermenters on at one time so don't like the idea of having 3 or 4 Tilts! Any suggestions?
