    Noob questions on first kit

Although I tend to either transfer a whole FV to either a PB or bottles, I'd probably fill the PB and then rack off some bottles trying not to get air into the mix. As mentioned above, bottling wands are great for preventing air getting into the brew whilst bottling and allows you to keep the...

    Noob questions on first kit

You can but you don't need/want to use a tap if you're transferring to the PB. Just syphon it out using the large tube provided, takes a couple of minutes..if you want it in a bottle also, carefully use the tap on the PB.. And of course you'd need to buy a tap and run risk of creating a leaky...

    Noob questions on first kit

The FV in the kit doesn't have a tap but an FV with a tap is better for bottling. With an additional FV you can A) use it to batch prime a brew in the other FV. B) Brew two kits at the same time. C) use it to clean all your equipment by making up your sterilisation solution in it. FVs are...

    Noob questions on first kit

Yes, that's the kit I've got... You may want to add another FV with a tap to the order. Let's you brew something for the PB and something to bottle all at the same time :)

    Noob questions on first kit

One of the joys of brewing is buying new kit etc. Have you looked at the Youngs Micro Brewery starter kits? They include PBs and the APA, AIPA and Amber Ales are very good. Brew2Bottle have them for under £58 with a possible 5% discount for 1st order. I've three of these kits, primarily bought...

    Wilko Homebrew

Picked up a Wherry.. Got the last one in my store as the other box had been opened and the yeast taken/stolen. Noticed the same thing happening in B&M last year though the Myob boxes were easier to detect tampering. Offer ends Wednesday 4th December.

Which sort of capper should I ask santa for?

Bench... I also have a Wilko hand capper but it's a two person job if the work surface is wet and they leave indents in the caps..

    Noob questions on first kit

My house is cooler than most so I use some 'reptile tank' heat mats, 7 usd from AliExpress. They raise the temperature of a 23l brew by about 6 degrees above room temperature. In a normal house you probably won't need one, as fermentation takes off the temperature will raise inside the FV.

The Range 'Make Your Own' Red

I've just ordered this from B2B who have this in clearance offer (less than 50p per bottle). Are you using granulated sugar or Brewers sugar? I'm not sure using 3.5kg of brewers sugar would make much difference..

    School Boy Error

I doubt you've much to worry about, you batch primed, sanitised and are bottle conditioning (CO2 etc). Do you know the expected ABV? Can I just ask, do many people re-use bottle caps? Since Wilko discontinued selling Bottle Caps I'm now having to buy them online. I've started to re-use the...

    Coopers Irish Stout tweaks

Thanks for the advice on Muscovado was going to add a 500g bag as I only have 500g of DME.. I'll use the Turkish Coffee then..I've also a filter I use when syphoning as I'm also intending to use a PB for this as I don't have many bottles and my last kit Stout served from a bottle had a...

    Coopers Irish Stout tweaks

Thanks.. I've DME and Muscovado ready for the additional enhancer.. Will remember to add the DME after the water as last time my LME clumped a bit in the hotter solution. Some members mention the oils in coffee so I was wondering if Turkish Coffee (although boiled for 6 minutes) wouldn't be...

    Coopers Irish Stout tweaks

Hi, Going to brew a Coopers Irish Stout soon and considering adding Turkish Coffee or chillies. I've some very good Turkish coffee and was wondering if I could use it 1:1 as a replacement for the 3 or 4 espressos? Would I need to filter the 'bits', could they 'go off' if added to the...

    What are you drinking tonight.

Who knows!? At a budget All Inclusive resort in Sharm El Sheikh and although everything comes out of an Egyptian Stella bottle the taste, IBU and ABV are totally different.. One tastes/looks like it has vodka/ethanol added, the other is a usual lager (taste, head retention etc) ..

    Heat Mats

I'm always trying to save money and wondering if anyone has used a Reptile Heat Mat instead of the usual Brewers Heat Mat? With various sizes and from 5w to 45w would these be any good? https://m.aliexpress.com/wholesale/reptile-heat-mat.html Ideally in the future I want to create a beer...

    Google 20 years old.

At Uni in 1989 the JANET (Joint Accademic NETwork) ruled.. You get your own email address (ending .ac.uk) and you can talk to any other similarly like minded 'nerd'.. Your mates were keen to share their friends email addresses and you just emailed people you didn't know simply because you...

    Sweeten Cider After Fermentation

I agree, pop a Lidl RED Cologran (a year ago they replaced them with inferior tablets in a yellow case) or Tesco Everyday Value sweetener tablet in the glass when serving. They both contain Sodium Cyclamate and Sodium Saccharin and for me are the best sweeteners - been using them in coffee for...
