    Dry hop scaling??

Commercial or larger scale brewers tend to ferment for a shorter time than homebrewers. Not really sure why. In this example it only gives you 10 days in the FV rather than 14. I went on a tour of Hawkshead brewery and they keg at 7 days and allow the residual sugars to carbonate the beer. I...

    Another first...dry hopping

I sterilise a piece of net curtain and tie it over my bottling wand. Works a treat to keep dry hops at bay. I keep a piece specially for the purpose rather than borrowing it from the living roomwink...

Looking for that WOW factor - am I falling out of love with beer?

A big advantage of AG is that it's cheaper. You have more control over sweetness since you didn't mash the malt for extract so don't know what it will be like 'til you've made a brew. AG won't make your beer better, your methods will do that.

Looking for that WOW factor - am I falling out of love with beer?

I use a 32l pot for a stove top (well AGA top, actually. It's like Delia Smith's kitchen here.) modified BIAB. I start with 23l of water. The pot is 32cm high so each centimeter is one litre! I mash the grain, drain and get it back on the stove. I open the bag, which is actually just a piece of...

2004 Skoda Fabia VRS 1.9 130bhp Diesel vs 2016 Ford Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost 123bhp petrol

I'd imagine the OPs observations about the difference in performance and not being able to pull the higher gears is due to the difference in torque. Power output is a different beast. It's the turning force you need to get it moving, That's why electric cars are so impressive off the mark. You...

Ban on new petrol and diesel cars in UK from 2030 under PM's green plan

The Renault warranty is amusing. You try covering 100,000 EV miles in 3 years. It's not just recharging which degrades batteries. Time is an equal enemy. You may find, for instance, that you can do 60,000 miles in 5 years but if you try to do that mileage over 10 years things might not go so...

How do you track your brews?

I record in a notebook. I have books going back years. I use small coloured self adhesive spots on the caps of bottles to identify them and stick one by the recipe in the book. I never leave my beers aging for years so my 6 colour options are enough.

Looking for that WOW factor - am I falling out of love with beer?

I brewed extract for years, just adding steeped crystal for a bit of colour/flavour. I moved on to AG and years later broke 2 vertebrae (not brewing!) I couldn't manage AG whilst I healed so did a couple of extracts and they were really nice. I'd changed the hopping a bit and put the improvement...

Ban on new petrol and diesel cars in UK from 2030 under PM's green plan

Whatever you do don't rapid charge! You'll only get 300 charge/discharge cycles if you charge nice and slowly. I have, for reference owned 2 electric vehicles and have an extensive knowledge of battery technology. I even have a degree in chemistry so my knowledge isn't just something I picked up...

Ban on new petrol and diesel cars in UK from 2030 under PM's green plan

So few EV fanatics ever tackle perhaps the biggest drawback of battery power. As one of the top men at Nissan said when they released the Leaf "the life of the battery determines the life of the car". Back then they didn't realise that the batteries would average a mere 50-70,000 miles. Who'd...

Will dry hopping be worth it for me?

Erm....I never really follow recipes. I have a system which I've evolved over 169 AG brews. Gawd knows who drunk all that beer. My current way, for a 23l brew, is to use a not too harsh bittering hop like Goldings at the start of a 60 minute boil. 20g seems a good amount. I'm currently then...

Ban on new petrol and diesel cars in UK from 2030 under PM's green plan

Even if we give EVs the benefit and imagine they only consume 300Wh per mile. Each EV does a mere 8,000 miles per year. That's 300*3600*8,000 or 8,640,000,000 joules per year. Each car therefore draws a continuous average of 274 watts from the grid. so a mere 10,000,000 cars will need...

Ban on new petrol and diesel cars in UK from 2030 under PM's green plan

Electric vehicles will set us back to before WW2. Only the well off will be able to stay mobile. What about those who can't charge at home? A bus ride to a car park where your car's charging? Imagine if the energy could be stored in a highly efficient liquid rather than a battery? That's...

Ban on new petrol and diesel cars in UK from 2030 under PM's green plan

It's all about stimulating those "improvements in battery technology". Same improvements we've been looking for for nearly 200 years and the best we've come up with is lithium ion. Limited range and a lifespan of 50-70,000 miles. Who can then afford £6-12,000 to replace the batteries in an aging...

How many of those are left on the road?

Terrym, you need to look at Ford Cortina 1600 GL, of which there are 17. This is way up from a low point of 8 a few years ago. I think they were selling 200,000(?) Cortinas per year at the peak! We are the only big classic car fancying country in Europe. There's a good chance the EU will ban...

How many of those are left on the road?

My first car was a Talbot Solara owned by the business I worked for. There are 9 still left. I deeply pit their owners:laugh8:

How many of those are left on the road?

If you've ever wondered the answer to the question in the title you need to visit How Many Left?. Unless it's a very old car or bike or a kit car you can find how many are left on the road and see the last 10 years of history. I was reminded of the website by the name of a forum member who's...

    Geterbrewed?

During lockdown mk 1 my local shop closed. I'd used Leyland Homebrew for donkeys years and the only place that would take my order was GEB. It arrives well packaged in a tough cardboard box and I'm a happy bunny after several more orders. Nothing has been missing and nothing damaged in any...

    Bottle Conditioning

My latest brew was nicely clear when I bottled and I managed to not disturb the yeast whilst I bottled. It's still showing tiny bubbles around the necks of some of the bottles so is not finished. 2 weeks before a cheeky taste is good advice.

Wort Chiller - Is it really necessary?

My experience, having read virtually non of this thread, is that no chill beers are a waste of good hops. No doubt you can make decent beer and I did no chill for years but if you want a good late hopped taste you’re going to need to cool the wort or the alpha acids will keep isomerising. It’s...
