Damson wheat beer - good or terrible idea?

I'm pleased that you have produced a drinkable fruit beer. I'm not sure what you could do about sweetening it up next time, but perhaps a different yeast or a higher mash temperature might help???? Or possibly some lactose?

    Covid - Plan B & Omicron

Interesting points, but in the absence of reliable and precise scientific data on the efficacy of the lateral flow tests (if such data exists), I think that regular and frequent testing is the next best option because the more tests you do the better the statistical accuracy of the overall result.

    Covid - Plan B & Omicron

They were the lateral flow tests, which I know are not entirely reliable. However, we intend to continue testing, which should reduce the likelihood of error/false negatives. Good point about the potentially long incubation period. We will be cautious, and fortunately we do not need to go out...

    Covid - Plan B & Omicron

Just returned today from a few days away in our motorhome, so have not been keeping up with anything on the forum recently. However, we got a bit of a shock on Monday morning when our daughter informed us by text that our grandson (9 years old) had tested positive. She had been informed by one...

    Black malt vs Chocolate malt

What I should also have said was that I have brewed quite a few beers over the years where the proportion of chocolate/roasted/black malt has been at a similar level, and I've brewed both with and without the small additions. I could never detect any difference in taste. I suspect that the batch...

    Black malt vs Chocolate malt

I really doubt very much if you will taste 17g in a 5kg mash. It's only there for the colour.

    I'm Struggling

These are unbelievably challenging times for a lot of people, and you are very brave to admit that you have a problem. It is impossible to put yourself inside somebody else's head, and I have no wish to play at being the well intentioned amateur therapist, but keeping busy is a big step...

Recommend books for all grain brewing.

I doubt very much if there is a "one size fits all" homebrewing book available. During my many years of brewing I've collected quite a lot of brewing books, and I've learnt something from all of them. In recent years I've bought several of the American books, e.g. How to Brew (John Palmer)...

If you could only drink one commercial beer for the rest of your life.......

A few years ago my wife and I stayed on a campsite in our motor home just outside Jever. We went to see the brewery, but we didn't bother with the tour because my German isn't really good enough, and she's not that interested either. However, it was very nice indeed to have the opportunity to...

Can we be a little more accepting of our differences?

The content of the snug is for the most part a bit of light hearted fun and banter, and your own contribution is much appreciated athumb.. I would not like to see it closed because of a few "bad apples". . . . . . . Please note the language of restraint 🤐

If you could only drink one commercial beer for the rest of your life.......

A difficult choice but here in the UK it would have to be "Proper Job" because, although draught is best, bottles are a close second. However, if I was in Germany then Jever Pils. It must be one of the bitterest German pilsners ever. I've drunk it many times on draught in Germany, but...

    Filling HLT/all-in-one from garden hose

A perfect solution. Blue MDPE is made for the job

    Filling HLT/all-in-one from garden hose

I have been trying to get some to test, but it only seems to be available to the brewing trade in the UK in large quantities. Also, it appears to have a limited shelf life, and has to be stored at low temperatures (5 to 12degC). This clearly puts homebrew shops and online retailers off the idea...

    Filling HLT/all-in-one from garden hose

Hmmmm, not an appealing cocktail of chemicals . . . . . I may have to reconsider my options 🤔

    Filling HLT/all-in-one from garden hose

I agree. I sometime use rice hulls, but I now rinse them several times with boiling water before stirring them into the mash. The rinse water is always brown, so who knows what is actually in there???? . . . . . Probably some of the paddy-field and whatever they put on it sick...

How about the "guessing stick" It was always helpful to know the answer before you started a calculation :?:

    Filling HLT/all-in-one from garden hose

I was employed for most of my working life by two large chemical companies in their plastics businesses in technical roles. For a large part of that time my product responsibilities included PVC (aka vinyl). . . . . . . So, flexible PVC contains plasticisers to make it pliable and soft. Some of...

Can we be a little more accepting of our differences?

I don't know if this will help, but I have a copy of the 3rd edition dated 2009. It is a Camra publication, so I'm not sure if this is the "fluffy" edition or not. But here is a scan of the section on hop utilisation. Until reading the above posts, I wasn't even aware that anything significant...

    Covid - Plan B & Omicron

Another day on, and my arm is almost back to normal again, and no other problems. At least I managed to get a decent nights sleep. I was however a bit dismayed last night when I was unable to convince my wife that excessive flatulence is a little known side effect of the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine...
